It has been an absolute pleasure having Gaeltacht Thiar Thir Chonaill Plein Air Painters of Donegal using Doochary as their inspiration today. We did a quick tour of the village before they chose their subject matter and they had a pit stop at The Old Garda Station for a cupán tae. Well done to all the artists - amazing work produced. 🙌

On 29th June, 1906, after a long battle, the people of Doochary won the rights to fish on the Gweebarra River. When news of the victory came through, local people celebrated with bonfires on the hills and song and dance, to live music played by the local band.

The Marquis Conyngham, who claimed full fishing rights between Doochary and Ballynacarrick had brought the case to the Four Courts in Dublin 4 months earlier. The locals had lost and were ordered to pay costs. However, the people of Doochary appealed this decision, won their case and considerable costs were instead awarded against the landlord.

'For many years the anniversary of “The Winning of the River” was annually celebrated on the 29th of June with fires and flutes and Gaelic song until more stirring themes brought more stirring times – for better or for worse. Yet the memory of those three steadfast men (one of whom has already gone to his heavenly reward) will long be cherished by the emancipated peasantry of the Gweebarra Glen.'
