Angela Balfe from Kildare Wildlife Rescue releases five young hedgehogs rescued as hoglets and rehabilitated at Kildare Wildlife Rescue.

They are now ready to be released back into a natural, safe habitat and Powerscourt Estate has been chosen for their release.

Join Rosemary, one of our gardeners, in Powerscourt Gardens from 11-12 am for a "Biodiversity Tour".

The tour will last 1 hour and will be guided by Rosemary, who will walk the group through different parts of the gardens highlighting all the biodiversity initiatives which have been recently undertaken.
Rosemary will spend time in the herbaceous border to chat through this year's planting and blooms.

She will also give tips on how to recreate biodiverse areas in your own garden at home on a smaller scale.

The tour will start on the top terrace at 11 am sharp. Please ask for directions at reception on arrival.

Ireland's leading conservationists, educators, nature filmmakers and community groups gathered at Powerscourt Estate last week for the 2026 Working with Nature Awards, celebrating the people and projects making an outstanding contribution to biodiversity restoration, nature protection, nature education and nature communication across Ireland.

The ceremony brought together nominees from across the country to celebrate inspiring initiatives restoring habitats, protecting dark skies, connecting communities with nature through education, and using storytelling to inspire a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

The awards were presented by judges Éanna Ní Lamhna, Duncan Stewart and Alex Slazenger, Head Gardener at Powerscourt Gardens.

Nature Education & Wellbeing: St Anne's City Farm & Ecology Centre – for inspiring people of all ages to connect with nature through education and volunteering.

Sarah Slazenger, Managing Director of Powerscourt Estate, said:

"The Working with Nature Awards celebrate the remarkable people and organisations helping nature recover across Ireland. From restoring habitats and protecting biodiversity to inspiring communities through education and storytelling, every finalist demonstrates that positive action can make a lasting difference. We hope these awards not only recognise their achievements but also encourage many more people to take practical action for nature in their own communities."

Special Recognition Award: Manchán Magan – honoured posthumously for his outstanding contribution to reconnecting people with Ireland's language, landscapes and nature.

Outstanding Nature Protector Award: The Hare's Corner / Burrenbeo Trust – recognised for empowering communities across Ireland to restore biodiversity through practical nature restoration projects.

Nature Media – Writing & Publishing: Irish Wildlife Trust – Seeds of Inspiration – for encouraging practical action for nature through inspiring stories.

Nature Media – Science Communication & Public Engagement: Pearse Stokes – Kildare Wildlife Rescue – for combining wildlife rescue with public education.
