We’re opening Ballyvolane House for a special National Heritage Week 2026 event on Thursday, 20 August.

This year’s theme is “Heritage at Risk”, and Justin be leading a tour of the house and grounds, sharing some of Ballyvolane’s history, the stories of those who have cared for it, and the work we’re doing today to preserve and maintain the house for future generations.

Justin will also talk about what it means for Ballyvolane to remain part of Ireland’s active, living heritage - a historic place that continues to evolve, welcome people and play a role in contemporary life.

We’ll start with tea, coffee, homemade cakes and pastries, before exploring the house, gardens, mature trees, woodland and wildlife habitats.

Hope you can join us!

Delighted to join Sinéad Ryan on Newstalk’s The Home Show to talk about the joys and challenges of running a historic house.

We also discussed the work of Historic Houses of Ireland and the search for new members, weddings in historic houses - and even buried treasure and a murder mystery.

Thanks to Sinéad and the Newstalk team for having me.

Today, on Wild Salmon Day, we’re raising the flag for the wild Atlantic salmon — and for the River Blackwater.

In the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, spring, summer and autumn at Ballyvolane were shaped by salmon anglers travelling here to fish the Blackwater. It brought life to the river, supported local businesses, and was part of the rhythm of rural Ireland.

Today, that world has almost disappeared.

Wild salmon, once so abundant and so woven into Irish folklore that they appeared on the old 10p coin, are now in crisis.

Climate change, rising sea temperatures, reduced zooplankton energy, overfishing, predation, poor river management and the impact of fish farming have all played their part.

But the lack of urgency in protecting one of Ireland’s most iconic species is heartbreaking.

To me, wild salmon mean memory, livelihood, folklore and loss. They mean the Blackwater as it once was: alive with anglers, stories and seasonal rituals.

Above all, they mean responsibility — to speak up before this iconic species disappears from Irish rivers, and from Irish identity, forever.

It’s that time of year again, when the woods turn blue and the paths have an almost magical and mystical quality. Makes the heart sing.

These beautiful photographs of the bluebell woods at Ballyvolane House were taken by James Fennell some years ago.
