Hidden in a high glacial valley in west Cork, Gougane Barra is a small lake ringed by steep mountains and one of the quietest places in Ireland. On an island at its edge stands a small oratory associated with Saint Finbarr, who is said to have founded a hermitage here in the sixth century before he went on to found the city of Cork.
The name means the rock of Barra, a form of Finbarr. For centuries the island was a place of pilgrimage, and in the penal times Mass was said here in secret, with the faithful gathering in the valley below the hills.
The River Lee rises in the lake before beginning its journey east to Cork, so the still water you see on a quiet morning is the same river that runs through the city many miles away. Poets and walkers have come here for the silence for generations.
