An Ghaeltacht 🇮🇪

If ever you see signs in Ireland 🇮🇪 that read - An Ghaeltacht- then you are in a district of Ireland where the Irish language is the main language spoken in that area ☘️. Many of the Gaeltacht areas are located on the Atlantic coast which includes parts of Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry and Cork. There are a number of Gaeltacht areas in other counties like Waterford on the South East Coast of Ireland, and county Meath in the province of Leinster.
Irish is one of the oldest and most historic written languages in the world 🌍. It came to this country from the continent of Europe over 2500 years ago. By the beginning of the Christian era, Irish was spoken throughout the island of Ireland.
There is a strong traditional arts culture in the Gaeltacht, and the people of the Gaeltacht are famous for dancing, song and crafts etc. The Gaeltacht area in the photograph is Lohar, Waterville Co.Kerry 💚.

Today, the 16th of May, we celebrate St. Brendan's Day, the legacy of St. Brendan the Navigator, the patron saint of sailors, mariners, travelers, and navigators.

St. Brendan embarked on a daring journey across the vast Atlantic Ocean, seeking the fabled "Isle of the Blessed." His name is on a school and a community hall here in Erris, and of course, as the fabled baptisor of the local Children of Lir, a church!

Legend has it that during his voyage, St. Brendan encountered many incredible sights and experiences, like icebergs, bioluminescent oceans, the Northern Lights and even whales... far too many stories for this little update!

Modern day Erris is full of outdoor art, murals, sculptures and more. It's always my guests favourite thing to be photographed with, the bright and colourful mural by talented artist Friz on the gable end of a building in Eachléim.

Here you can see many of the legends of St Brendan in the brilliant mural, but to hear the rest, you'll have to book a really great tour and see for yourself 😉💭🇮🇪🔜
