Joe Mc’s pub, thankfully, is still very much alive in Louisburgh. This business has seen many generations of McNamaras in business in Louisburgh.

Joe’s Grandfather, William McNamara, opened the shop in 1852, McNamara’s bar and drapery, selling boots, shoes, Wellingtons, ladies' and men’s wear and suits. After William died, his wife Honora ran the shop.

The next generation to run the shop was Paddy and Tess McNamara, Joe’s parents.
In 1972, Joe and his wife Marion took over the shop, soon after, they closed the drapery and developed the pub over the years. Joe's son Darragh now runs the pub.

We wish McNamara’s continued success in Louisburgh.

Gaffney’s

Originally run by Annie Gaffney (nee O’Malley), who was born on Bridge Street in the former Kenny’s Shop (now FM Auctioneers).
Annie had an entrepreneurial spirit; she had a bar and games room. She had a sewing machine and employed seamstresses who made clothes and burial shrouds. She had a grocery shop and a bakery, where she employed a baker. Annie was married to Frank Gaffney, who was a policeman. Their son Charlie Gaffney and his wife Eileen took over the business and ran it as a grocery and pub. Eileen also provided dinners for Fair Days.

The shop is now run as a restaurant by Orla Gaffney, Charlie and Eileen’s daughter.
We’d love to hear your memories of the generations of Gaffney’s shop.

Crafty Louisburgh

We are calling out for photos of Louisburgh and Killeen shops. Do you have any photos hidden away in attics? The Village Shops wants to hear from you.

We are delighted at An Siopa Áitúil that local craft groups ‘Crafty Club’ and ‘Knit, Stitch and Natter’ are teaming up with us to create an exciting exhibition for National Heritage Week.
To do this, we need photos of shop fronts and any other photos of shops or shopkeepers you have.

Contact us here or email [email protected]

Many thanks in advance for your help.
