Today I came across this interview with the late Oliver Haslette and thought it was particularly worth sharing in the terribly sad circumstances of the past 10 days.
Oliver speaks here for himself about the place in which he was born and reared, and to which he devoted so much of his life — Manorhamilton and County Leitrim. Reading it again now, his affection for the place, his pride in it and, equally, his determination that we should make much more of what we have, come through very strongly.
Oliver, together with his wife Joan, made an enormous contribution to the business and community life of Manorhamilton and Leitrim over more than half a century. His contribution continued long after most people might have decided to take things a little easier.
In later years that included his great interest in our local history and heritage. Oliver was the first Chairman of the Manorhamilton and District Historical Society, with Joan serving as Secretary, and he remained deeply involved in recording and promoting the history of the town.
But perhaps the nicest tribute is simply to read Oliver’s own words here. They show his love of North Leitrim, but also something very characteristic of Oliver — a belief that we could and should do better for the place.
Our deepest sympathies to Joan, John, Paul, Ronan, Siobhán and Marianne, and to all the extended Haslette family, following Oliver’s tragic passing.
