Our Autumn classes are starting to take shape and we now have the classes that are confirmed so far up on our website!

🌼 Wildflower Sowing Workshop – This Evening

Join us this evening for our Wildflower Sowing Workshop with Ryan Harkin, taking place at The Benwiskin Centre from 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

Please note: the workshop is now fully booked.

For those attending, please bring gloves if you have them but not essential. Workshop outdoors.

This workshop is funded through Sligo LEADER Partnership Company Ltd under SICAP (Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme) Small Grants Fund and is free to participants.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Isla Twigg, Dr Finn Ryder and Ryan Davies, MSc, from the SeaForest Project to The Benwiskin Centre this past week. The team were based here while carrying out important kelp forest research along the surrounding coastline, including around Mullaghmore Head. The SeaForest project is a national kelp mapping study based out of the University of Galway.

The team was busy collecting data along the coastline using a combination of boat-based camera work and SCUBA diving surveys. These surveys provide important information on kelp forest biodiversity and structure and will help in our understanding of these important habitats all along the Irish coast. Some of the oldest kelp (Laminaria hyperborea) that they have seen so far was found just outside Mullaghmore Head, reaching up to 10 years old. This work was initially funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The research is now ongoing with financial support from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.
