Episode 9 The Wandergesellen: Craftsmanship, Precision & The Art of Making

At Barrow House, luxury is found in the details — in the precision of a beautifully made door, the integrity of a hand-finished piece, and the extraordinary skill of craftsmen who understand that good work should last for generations.

For the creation of our Ait Ciúin — our Quiet Place garden room — and its magnificent Gothic arch door, we had the privilege of collaborating with the Wandergesellen, Germany’s traditional wandering craftsmen.

The Wandergesellen have followed a remarkable tradition for centuries. After completing their training, craftsmen travel from place to place, working with different masters, learning new techniques and refining their skills before eventually returning home. Their distinctive black clothing, travelling lifestyle and dedication to their craft are fascinating, but it is their discipline, precision and pursuit of excellence that particularly resonated with us at Barrow House.

Our collaboration brought together two things we value deeply: a vision for beautiful spaces and the exceptional skills required to realise that vision. Ideas were exchanged, details refined and traditional craftsmanship combined with the character of this historic Irish house.

The result is the Ait Ciúin — a tranquil garden room designed as a quiet retreat within the grounds of Barrow House — and a striking Gothic arch door, individually crafted to become an architectural feature in its own right.

It is this approach to craftsmanship that defines much of Barrow House. From bespoke interiors and historic architectural details to carefully considered spaces throughout the house and gardens, we believe luxury is not about excess. It is about quality, authenticity, proportion, craftsmanship and the pleasure of being surrounded by things made exceptionally well.

Our Wandergesellen story is ultimately a story of collaboration: German craftsmanship meeting an Irish Georgian house, traditional skills meeting contemporary vision, and precision meeting imagination.

There is an old-fashioned kind of magic in honey.

Golden, sweet and made by thousands of tiny workers among the flowers, honey has long carried associations of health, sweetness, abundance and happiness. In Ireland, where folklore once gave meaning to almost every part of country life, the home, the garden and the food brought from the land were all closely connected with good fortune and well being.

At Barrow House, we like to think our bees continue a little of that tradition.

Our hives sit among the gardens, where the bees move from flower to flower, helping to pollinate the plants that make the Gardens so abundant. In return, they give us something very special: our own Barrow House honey, enjoyed at the breakfast table by our guests.

And perhaps that is the sweetest kind of luxury — one that begins in the garden and finds its way naturally to the table.

The gentle rhythm of beekeeping, the scent of flowers, the sound of bees among the borders and the pleasure of tasting honey produced here all belong to the experience of staying in an Irish Country House.

So this little chapter of The Barrow Chronicles is a celebration of our Barrow House Bees — and a wish for everyone who comes through our doors: good health, a little good fortune, and plenty of sweetness during your stay.

Episode 6 The Bluebells of Barrow: A Legacy in Every Seed

Every spring, something magical happens at Barrow House.

Across the lawns, gardens and woodland, thousands of wild bluebells emerge, gradually transforming the grounds into a sea of blue. It is one of the most beautiful signs that spring has arrived at our historic Georgian Waterfront Country House on the Wild Atlantic Way.

But these bluebells are more than simply beautiful.

They are part of the story of Barrow House.

One of the house's former owners, Maureen Erde, who ran Barrow House as a golfers' guesthouse in the 1990s, loved the extraordinary abundance of bluebells here. She wrote about her life at Barrow in her much-loved book, "Help Me, I’m an Irish Inn Keeper, describing the spectacular display that greeted her each spring.

So, in her memory, we gather and carefully hand-sow bluebell seed each year, encouraging the flowers to spread naturally through the lawns, gardens and woodland.

We call it keeping Barrow Blue.

Blue is, of course, the signature colour of Barrow House — reflected in our logo and woven into the identity of the house. But there is something much more meaningful behind the colour. Every handful of seed connects the present Barrow House with the people who loved this place before us.

From the Knights of Kerry and the Fitzgerald family, who affectionately called Barrow their Summer house, to the McCowen family, whose lifestyle photographs and memories remain part of the house archive, and Maureen Erde, whose stories captured Barrow's life as an Irish innkeeper, each generation has left something behind.

Our little act of reseeding is therefore more than gardening. It is a way of keeping the history of Barrow House alive — one bluebell at a time.

And for our guests, it is a beautiful reminder that staying at Barrow House is about more than luxury accommodation. It is about experiencing an authentic Irish Country House, its gardens, its stories, its landscape and the generations of people who have cared for this extraordinary corner of Kerry.

Come in spring and you may find yourself walking through the very legacy we are planting today.

Episode 5 - Barrow House Totem Pole: History, Wildlife & the Stories of Kerry

Standing thirty feet tall in the grounds of Barrow House, our totem pole is more than a piece of sculpture. It is Barrow House's story, carved into wood for future generations.

From its very base, the pole tells the story of this extraordinary place.

A badger represents the wildlife that shares our gardens, woodlands and shores. Above it comes the Randy Wall, a playful but important reference to Barrow's colourful history of smuggling and to Collis, the man who built Barrow House, whose story is woven into the history of the harbour and its walls.

As the carving rises, the story moves through the natural world that surrounds us — birds, woodland creatures, the sea and the landscape that has shaped life at Barrow for centuries. And then there are three proud sea trout, leaping and swimming in the water directly in front of the house, capturing one of the most magical sights that can still be witnessed from Barrow today.

Like the bluebells that we carefully reseed each spring, the totem pole is part of our commitment to preserving and celebrating the history of Barrow House.

The house has been shaped by generations of people — from the Knights of Kerry and the Fitzgeralds, to the McCowen family and Maureen Erde — each leaving their own mark on this remarkable Irish country house. Now, we are adding our own chapter.

Rather than simply preserving the past behind glass or in an archive, we wanted to create something that could be discovered, enjoyed and interpreted by those who come after us.

Thirty feet of history. One extraordinary house. A story carved for the future.

For guests staying at Barrow House, the totem pole offers another glimpse into what makes a stay here so distinctive: luxury accommodation surrounded by nature, history and stories that belong uniquely to this corner of County Kerry.

Because at Barrow House, the past isn't simply remembered — it is still being written.

Episode 4 - The Walls That Remember

Wallpaper is one of the few things we choose knowing we may live with it for decades.
Paint can be changed in a weekend. Furniture is rearranged. Pictures are taken down, replaced, or moved from room to room.

But wallpaper becomes part of the architecture itself. It settles into the bones of a house and quietly remains, watching life unfold around it. Perhaps that is why choosing wallpaper feels so different. It is never simply decoration. It is a declaration of taste, personality and optimism—a decision made with the future in mind.

At Barrow House, every wallpaper has been chosen to become part of the story. Some are antique hand-blocked papers, printed using techniques that have changed little over centuries. Others are panoramic landscapes that invite the eye to wander beyond the room, while richly patterned floral chintzes bring warmth, colour and intimacy to historic interiors.

Look carefully and you'll find wallpaper in unexpected places. Not only on the walls of bedrooms and reception rooms, but lining panelled alcoves, tucked inside drawers and even bringing character to bathrooms.
Every corner offers another surprise, another layer of craftsmanship waiting to be discovered. These papers don't simply decorate the house—they shape its atmosphere. They soften the sounds, light, enrich the architecture and become part of the memories guests take home with them. Like an old friend, the longer you live with a beautiful wallpaper, the more you appreciate its quiet presence. It becomes familiar without ever becoming ordinary. In a world that constantly encourages us to replace and reinvent, wallpaper reminds us of something rather wonderful—that true luxury isn't always about change. Sometimes it is about choosing something beautiful enough to love.
