Mount Congreve House, home to six generations of Congreves, was built in 1760 by the celebrated local architect John Roberts. Inspired by Mr Lionel de Rothschild’s exceptional garden at Exbury in Hampshire, works began on Mount Congreve's Garden in the 1950s by Garden Director Herman Dool. Ambrose Congreve's passion for his spectacular garden is still evident today. To make the most of your visit, we highly recommend taking a guided tour after which you can relax in the Stables Café where you will be served only the freshest of local produce, prepared & cooked daily. Located in the heart of Mount Congreve, the Secret Garden shop is more than just a gift store. We offer a unique range of gift ideas inspired by the beauty of nature and the gardens. It’s the first day of September🍃, and the hydrangeas are still looking beautiful in the gardens.

As we move into autumn, their colours are beginning to change. The bright blues, pinks and purples of summer are slowly fading into softer greens and muted tones.

Hydrangeas have such a long season of interest, and even as the flowers begin to fade, they continue to bring plenty of colour to the garden.

August is dahlia season at Mount Congreve Gardens. 🌸

From perfect pompons to dramatic, sculptural blooms, dahlias come in an extraordinary variety of shapes, sizes and colours.

Beautifully at home in a mixed border, they bring a fresh burst of colour just as many summer flowers begin to fade, making them one of the true stars of the late summer garden at Mount Congreve.

Echinacea — beautiful and useful.

A perfect companion for the vegetable garden, Echinacea attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators throughout summer.

It flowers from midsummer into autumn, loves a sunny spot and, once established, is remarkably easy to grow and drought tolerant. In Ireland, the key is good drainage — Echinacea copes with cold, but dislikes wet soil in winter.

And when flowering is over, leave a few seed heads for the birds 🐦‍⬛

What a wonderful day of National Heritage Week activities at Mount Congreve yesterday, all in support of the conservation and restoration of our historic Chinese Pagoda.
Our day began with two beautiful Qi Flow Movement experiences led by , inviting participants to reconnect with body, mind and nature before journeying through the gardens to discover our hidden Pagoda.
In the evening, we welcomed our esteemed guest Robert O’Byrne - acclaimed architectural historian, author and creator of - for a fascinating exploration of The Curious World of Ireland’s Follies. Our sincere thanks also go to John Beattie, Architectural Conservation Advisor, for his insightful introduction on the importance of protecting Ireland’s historic designed landscapes.
We are deeply grateful to the Irish Follies Trust for its invaluable support and to the National Built Heritage Service for funding these events through the Historic Gardens and Designed Landscapes Events Fund 2026.
Nearly fifty years of exposure to the Irish climate have taken their toll on the Pagoda. Every contribution, regardless of size, will help us undertake the specialist conservation work required to preserve this unique garden landmark for future generations.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a memorable celebration of heritage, architecture, culture and wellbeing.

In Ireland, a bee with a full tummy can be just 40 minutes away from starvation.

And for some solitary bees, even an extra 150 metres between their nest and a good source of flowers can reduce viable offspring by more than 70%.

A small reminder that for Ireland’s bees and bumblebees, every patch of wildflowers really can make a difference.
