Some objects become symbols because of the stories they carry.

The Peeche Kathi, the traditional ceremonial dagger of the Kodavas, is one such heirloom. Worn as part of the Kodava attire, it reflects a community whose history has long been shaped by courage, responsibility and a deep connection to the land.
It is not merely an ornament, but a reminder of values passed from one generation to the next.

At Evolve Back Coorg, these traditions are more than heritage. They are a way of life.

People lie at the heart of Evolve Back’s ethos and aspirations. This extends beyond our family, friends, and employees to the wider neighbourhood, which is home to many indigenous communities. To us, they embody the spirit of the land, a living expression of the forces that shape it. Their presence is both acknowledged and deeply celebrated.

Yet, in the decades since independence, the rapid pace of development has begun to place increasing strain on many small indigenous communities. It is steadily displacing them from traditional occupations and ways of life that have long defined their identity.

Native Roots is a photo essay that seeks to document these unique cultures as they stand at the crossroads of an inevitable transition.

Stories from Evolve Back

Birdwatching around the Coffee Forests of Coorg: Gentle drizzles. Soft rain on large leaves. The soothing hum of lush forests. This is how my Coorg morning greeted me. Layer by layer of sound, the sun rose above the misty hills. I sat still by the lake with my steaming cup and opened my ears to the sounds around me. The fish bubbles in the water, the rain on the damp soil, and the distant drumming of a woodpecker weaved a soundscape that drew me into a meditation.

Meet Gosiame Moalosi, Head of Department for Front of House and Housekeeping.

Affectionately known as “Lady Gee”, Gosiame Moalosi heads the Front of House (FOH) and Housekeeping departments at Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge. She joined the lodge in 2019 as a Housekeeping Supervisor and was promoted to her current dual-department leadership role in 2025. This promotion reflects her remarkable growth since she first entered the safari industry as a waitress in 2014.

Lady Gee takes great pride in her work, viewing both departments as the heart of hospitality. She believes that a guest’s positive experience begins with a clean and perfectly prepared room and is completed by exceptional service from the FOH team. Her favourite part of the job is meeting and interacting with people from all over the world—something that initially drew her to the safari industry.

Outside of work, Lady Gee is a mother of four—Pako, Nolen, Keletso and Mia. She enjoys spending her free time with her children, mother and grandmother. Beyond raising a happy and healthy family, her long-term ambition is to run her own tourism establishment and create employment opportunities for others.

When asked which animal she relates to most, Lady Gee chose the lion, as it represents power and commands a strong presence. She also admires the lion’s protective nature and the way it looks after its pride.
