On A Clear Day You can see Forever
Have you seen rhododendron in bloom; we have two shrubs ( they are shrubs even though they look like trees), tulips and daffodils in early spring- like in Holland and the Lake Districts in England. We have a room with a view- see as far as Sandakphu and Phalut , the ridges covered in snow in the winter months. You may notice nameplates of a lawyer and a doctor- they have moved on. The ambience is warm and friendly- no frills , no five star facilities because the learned men and women of the house were grounded people; comfortable but not luxurious. Why do some people see the world differently while others simply accept it as it is? Albert Einstein was one of those people who could not stop questioning things that everyone else took for granted. Born in 1879 in Germany, he was a quiet and curious child who was more interested in understanding how things worked than memorizing what he was told. His curiosity eventually led him toward questions about light, time, space, and the nature of the universe.

The turning point in his life came while he was working as a clerk at the Swiss Patent Office. He was not sitting in a famous university surrounded by other physicists. He spent his working hours examining inventions and his free time thinking about physics. In 1905, he published several papers that changed modern physics, including his special theory of relativity. The unknown patent clerk suddenly became one of the most important scientists of his time.

One lesson Einstein learned was that intelligence is not just about knowing more than others. It is also about having the courage to question what everyone else believes. His ideas challenged established scientific thinking, but he continued following his questions wherever they led him. He understood that imagination allows a person to see possibilities before they become obvious to everyone else.

As Einstein once said:

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

His life reminds us that you do not always need to know more than everyone else to discover something extraordinary. Sometimes you simply need to remain curious enough to ask a question that everyone else has stopped asking.

The familiar passage, the rhododendron in bloom, the photos we took of the New Lower Bedrooms I was talking about. A house becomes a home only if it’s cared for and there are caring people there. We have everyone there; Andrew the care taker cm chef cm odd job man and your go to man, his wife, the chief gardener and a wonderful cook and an amusing lady who does the cleaning, dish washing and some garden work. Of course Simba the friendly Alsatian puppy growing into a gentle giant by the day. He’s around 24/7 guarding the perimeter against intruders and being an intelligent being, knows who’s friend and who’s foe. He will be there at the gate when guests arrive, to welcome them.

We went home to Pradhan Cottage Homestay and were amazed to see the rhododendron trees bloom and also the azelias and for the first time the old avocado tree. Hoping it will give fruit this time. You don’t have to go to holland to see tulips; we have them there. And what’s more, we have renovated one section and called it new lower bedroom; guests will be pleasantly surprised to indulge in it’s comfortable ambience and the jewel in the crown is the balcony - on a clear day, you can see forever. Pradhan Cottage is our home in the mountains. We spent our childhood there. Now no one lives there except memories ; parents have passed away, children have moved away and so have cousins who stayed with us. Now even we have moved away, going there once in a while . It’s become a home far away from home for tourists who come to visit Darjeeling. Unlike in hotels, we have a care taker Andrew assigned to look after the guests. They will not be staring at the cold walls but rejoicing in the hospitality of Andrew who is a chef also. If you want to eat good food, all you have to do is ask Andrew.
