Birds of Hampi | Red – wattled Lapwing
If you spend time near wetlands or open farmland, you might spot the Red-wattled Lapwing
walking briskly across the ground. Its black throat and chest stand out sharply against a bold white streak that runs from its face down to its belly. Its bright red bill, tipped in black, and the small red patches in front of its eyes make it even more eye-catching.
This bird is usually seen in small groups, moving across open ground in short bursts. It runs forward, pauses, and quickly picks up insects from the soil. If you listen carefully, you may hear its loud, sharp alarm call, which many people say sounds like “Did he do it?”
During the breeding season, the pair does not build a proper nest. Instead, they make a simple scrape in the bare ground and lay three or four well-camouflaged eggs. If anyone comes too close, the adults fly up, circle overhead, and swoop down noisily to chase the intruder away.
