Imagine Jaisalmer in summer. The temperatures would peak at 48 Celsius by 2 PM. Pradip would haul us out of our rather basic hotel rooms by 5AM. We’d bundle into a car and set off into the deep Thar desert — the dezz as he would call it. Parking at some arbitrary place, we’d start exploring. Walk over dunes and into valleys, called NaaNs, watch a brilliant agama change colors, wait for gerbils to pop out of their little holes, peer at bushes that were found on only one dune systemm, pick up seeds, walk through arroyos, gawk at owl pellets, rest in the shade of a few moringa trees (imagine finding them on dunes!), look for birds big, small, medium, startle a saw-scaled viper, surprise a desert fox, and eventually climb down in ungainly ways from those dunes and return to our humble hotel by 10AM. Rest a while and then repeat at 4PM until the milky way bands across the sky.

To be out exploring with Pradip means to constantly peer at little things, marvel, wonder, and know. The polymath perfectionist that he is, his company pushes you to do better, be better. And then there are his jokes. Hearing them for the nth time — by when you can complete his sentences — still makes you chuckle. I met Pradip at a time when I had just started exploring the water ethic of the deep Thar and I would go back almost every month for more than a year to explore the desert with him and with the naturalists Harsha and Payal. There was no greater education, no better way to begin to understand that precious and underrated ecosystem, than with a self-taught, curious, and brilliant man like Pradip Krishen.

At a time when almost every major travel agent dismissed the idea of a desert botanical retreat, these three women kept believing in it.
Nagsri Prasad Sashidhar MCG of Agence de voyages sur mesure en Inde 🇮🇳 and Shoba Jose George of The Extra Mile by Shoba Jose George
They kept encouraging me, opening doors, and, most importantly, reminding me not to give up.

Today, Kaner has received international recognition. And the idea that once seemed so improbable — a botanical retreat in the Thar Desert — hasn’t just survived. It has thrived.

And perhaps the most rewarding part is what comes next. As I look ahead to new partnerships and possibilities, I realise that Kaner has grown beyond my original vision. It now belongs to a community of extraordinarily talented people who believe in what we are creating here.

Guest Reviews 🦚- A very special place owned and run by very special people. The experience is magical, built around the beauty of the Thar Desert. The food that the desert helped provide was amongst the best we’ve eaten and being foodies the bar was high.

Time after time Samir introduced us to another wonderful experience. His knowledge of the history and traditions gave a brilliant insight and his stories of the stars were a special moment. Thank you Samir and your family.

We took the Thar to Mumbai for the Mahindra Automotive Scorpio Lifestyler/ Trail launch.

Sand. Art. Birds. Textiles. Food.
And a little bit of our heart.💚

Extremely grateful to the amazing teams at Mantra events, Mahindra Auto and Kaner Retreat.

You guys are the best 🌵🧿🦚

It began with a sacred grove — ten years of quiet documentation by artist Malini Saigal . Her paintings ask a question we still can’t answer. How did we miss this beauty and how did she capture it like a heartbeat? 💚

Kankeri Tree at the sacred grove/ Oran near Kaner.

Appliqué began as scrap fabric, stitched into art.
In the Thar, nothing is wasted.
Not a scrap. Not a grain. Not a drop of water.

Embroidery from the artisans of Barmer.

Pattu Weaving by local artisans

At Kaner, you are never far from birdsong.
So the birds came to Mumbai too — unannounced, uninvited, unmistakably ours.

The Tablescape made with the famous Marwari chillies🌶️ Sun-dried, foraged kachri.
The ingredients of garlic chutney from Thar that pairs with anything — millet sogra roti or sourdough bread, the earthy, flavour stays.

Once, wedding feasts were served in bell metal/Kansa
They called it “Kansa Parosna”.

The amazing events team at Mantra sent sand, straight from the Thar.
Mumbai poured rain that week.
The sand stayed dry. Untouched. Itself.

Mahindra Automotive Scorpio Lifestyler/ Trail launch
Inspired by deserts 🌵

Happy to showcase the desert edition.

It takes a village to raise a child.
It took a large team across Kaner, Mantra Events and Mahindra Automotive to carry a desert into a city.

Touch anything from the Thar, and your heart is never quite the same. Hope the beauty and abundance of the Thar Desert always inspires you.

We will be waiting. Padharo🙏🌸

3, 30, 300, 30,000 birds take on one of the toughest migration journeys every year. Demoiselle Cranes cover a distance of around 7000 kms to arrive in the small village of Khichan …their home from October to March.

A sight in beauty and a lesson in might 🐦
