The spa is private, and only for guests staying in.

Book the whole spa, or only the jacuzzi. One session, two or three hours, for upto four people at a time. The charge is for the private usage, not a count of heads. It is not in the room, and it is not open to anyone who is not staying.

Late autumn at Shanag. Winter is already on the peaks. Snow, fir, meadow, waterfalls, ponds & the himalayan village next door. A hike from the gate. A drive across the trans-Himalaya when you feel like going.

Then the chalet. Yours alone. A kitchen if you want one. The fire, the huskies, an alfresco cafe n private pub, orchards n gazebos; the week without a hotel timetable. The ordinary things work.

Snow is already on the ridges a short drive away. Down here the days are still pleasant, the colour is still out, and October is doing both at once.

Winter is not waiting for December. A few of those weeks are still free, and the rate does not change with the date.

People ask, when’s a good time to come? The next six months. Here, in one.

Once Dussehra’s done, the valley stays wide. The rush turns back, and the hills are your side.

Diwali is home, unless home travels too. Leave the grey air. Bring your people with you.

Leaves thin out. The evenings turn cold. A fire, a soak, a husky on hold.

Skip the Christmas crush. Come while it’s kind. January snow, for the few who don’t mind.

Summer shows up early. The mountains get loud. Message the dates now, before the whole crowd.

It’s an El Niño Winter next and November is when it peaks!

Winter at Shanag is not one long white month. It is a run of sharp weeks, from 15 November to 15 April.

Some weeks the orchard is bright and dry, the glaciers sharp, and the road open. Some weeks a disturbance lands, the valley turns, and the higher snow at Solang sits close enough for a morning and back by lunch. The evenings are the constant: fire, spa, the bar, harvest on the table when the hills still have it, and the huskies, who do not care if the flake count was modest.

Plan the week for what you actually want.

Mid-November to mid-December is colour leaving and the first cold. Quiet. Good for two.

Late December through February is the winter people mean: shorter days, a real chance of snow on the ground, and the weeks that go first.

March into mid-April is the turn. Snow higher up, melt in the orchard, longer light, fewer people.

The house is small on purpose. Main chalet for a reunion. A cottage if it is just two. Once a snow week is taken, it is taken.

Red leaf, gold leaf, blue sky, done.
October- November shall out-paint the sun.

Drive till the peaks make you pull over twice.
Hike while the weather is perfectly nice.

Then fire, or spa, or the bar after dark,
harvest still warm, and a husky on guard.

Two, if it’s romance. A crowd, if it’s loud.
Either way, this is the week you’ll retell out loud.
