Some birds you look for. The grey-headed fish eagle you notice - usually before it moves - perched over the Kabini, watching the water the way our naturalists do.

It lives almost entirely by the river, rarely far from water, and takes its catch straight from the surface. Pairs keep the same stretch year after year, so the one you see today may well be the one seen here last season, and the season before.

From the boat, drifting quietly, you come closer than you ever could on foot - close enough to watch it wait.

The rains have the river running high, and the backwaters are full of life.

People ask how to get here, and when to come - so we’ve put it in one place. The drive is part of it; whichever city you start from, the road quietens as you go. And Kabini is never the same place twice - cool and clear from October, dry and dramatic through summer, green and alive through the rains.

We’re on the edge of the reserve, so arrival is easy.

We welcome the rain here. It’s Kabini’s best season - the terrain comes alive, and the whole resort feels different 🌿

By three, you can hear it coming across the water before it arrives. The canvas overhead fills with it, lunch runs long, the verandah fills, and nobody’s in a hurry to be anywhere else.

The Kabini rises, the forest turns a green it only manages this time of year, and by four it’s usually stopped - light coming back through wet leaves in a way we’ve never quite managed to photograph.

September is the least crowded and most alive Kabini gets. We think that’s the whole argument.
