Vanghat Lodge

Vanghat Lodge Vanghat Lodge: A haven for seasoned wildlife and birding enthusiasts.

Enjoy walking safaris, immersive bird watching, and eco-friendly stays by the Ramganga River. Accessible only by a 2 km cross-country walk and raft across the river waters, Vanghat lodge is a wilderness paradise unlike anything else to be found around Jim Corbett National Park.

'Vanghat' translates from Hindi to mean 'forest on the river', and it can often be hard to determine where the woodland

ends and the lodge begins. Surrounded by the wildlife of the Kalagarh Tiger Reserve, itself part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve and situated on an important wildlife corridor, the lodge is host to all manner of iconic and rare species. Conservation and a minimized environmental footprint are central to our ethos and we are proud to say we are a lodge run by naturalists for naturalists. Vanghat is famed for its warm hospitality as well as its walking safaris, birding and mahseer fishing, all accompanied by expert local guides; tailor-made special interest stays can also be arranged for those with something particular in mind.

It was a pleasure hosting Mr. Rajiv Kumar at Vanghat.

Working in the field of sound acoustics and wildlife recording, he spent meaningful time listening to and documenting the natural soundscape around the forest. From bird calls along the river to memorable moments in the presence of elephants, his experience reflected a different way of observing the wilderness.

Thank you, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, for sharing your thoughtful words and time with us at Vanghat.

To experience the forests of Vanghat in your own way, feel free to connect with us for future stays and wilderness experiences.

Some places remain with us long after we leave them.

For Rosemary Fox, the forests and mountains of the Himalayas were among those places.

Born on 10 May 1930 in Lansdowne, she spent her childhood surrounded by rivers, forests, wildlife, and the quiet beauty of the Himalayan landscape. Even though life later took her across many countries and experiences, her connection with these mountains never faded.

In later years, she returned once again to the landscapes where many of her earliest memories of nature had begun.

Here at Vanghat, along the Ramganga River and the forests that surround it, we often witness the same quiet connection between people and wilderness — where the sound of flowing water, birdsong, and time spent in nature slowly become memories carried for years.

Remembering Rosemary Fox with respect and gratitude on her birthday.

For nearly a century, Sir David Attenborough has guided generations into the natural world — not through spectacle alone, but through observation, patience, and deep respect for life on Earth.

His voice travelled through forests, oceans, deserts, and remote wildernesses, helping distant worlds feel personal, familiar, and worth protecting.

For many naturalists, conservationists, photographers, birders, and travellers, the journey began with those quiet moments in front of a screen — watching nature unfold slowly and honestly. His work taught people not only to admire wildlife, but to truly notice it.

As Sir David Attenborough celebrates 100 remarkable years, we celebrate more than a broadcaster or filmmaker. We celebrate a voice that transformed curiosity into care, and wonder into responsibility.

Happy 100th Birthday to one of the greatest ambassadors the natural world has ever known.

About 50 km from Vanghat lies Manila — a quiet ridge named after the local deity Manila Devi. The landscape here opens into grassy slopes and conifer forests, forming an important habitat for Western Himalayan pheasants such as the Koklass Pheasant and the Cheer Pheasant. These birds are exceptionally well camouflaged, blending into cheer pine forests and tall grass, making each sighting both rare and rewarding.

In this video, two male Cheer Pheasants are seen sizing each other up — a behaviour associated with the breeding season during the summer months. What begins as quiet foraging quickly shifts into a brief interaction, offering a real glimpse into their natural behaviour within this landscape.

At Vanghat, our approach remains clear — wildlife comes first. We do not use playback calls or disturb birds to create sightings. No flushing, no interference — only patient observation. Through our Vanghat Guided Nature Journeys, we conduct birding and wildlife-centric excursions across Uttarakhand and the adjoining Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, including key landscapes like Dudhwa National Park and Haiderpur Wetland. Manila is one such summer excursion — where the focus remains on real field experiences, understanding behaviour, and ensuring the welfare of the species.

Plan your summer journey with us. Write to explore Manila and beyond.

Here is a young guest sharing her experience from her stay at Vanghat, along the Western Ramganga.

Time in the forest, walking quietly, sitting by the river, observing small things—and moments like watching an elephant herd cross and spend time in the water. Along the way, she also spent time engaging with the Discover Mowgli activities, in a way that felt easy and unforced.

Discover Mowgli continues through the summer at Vanghat—for those looking at a learning experience that stays light, natural, and enjoyable for children.

On Earth Day, 22 April 2026,
the forest doesn’t ask to be celebrated. It asks to be understood.

At Vanghat, Earth is not an idea—it is the sound of the Ramganga flowing through the valley, the feeling of a trail beneath your feet, the quiet presence of life moving around you. Mornings begin with birds, not notifications. Evenings settle with the river, not noise. And somewhere in between, you realise how little the forest needs from you—except awareness.

There is no checklist here, no rush to see more. Just time to observe, to slow down, and to exist within a landscape that continues on its own terms. This Earth Day, perhaps the most meaningful way to connect is not to arrive with expectations—but to leave with understanding.

If this is your kind of connection with the wild, Vanghat remains open—quietly.

What if your summer morning didn’t start with a phone… but with a forest?

A mother and her children, not just walking through the forest, but living it — creating the kind of family summer holiday memories that stay. Balancing over a fallen tree, helping each other along the trail, laughing at small missteps… moments that don’t feel planned, but just happen.

And then, somewhere along the way, the walk slows down.
Breakfast in the shade, a quiet pause, and stories shared with the guide who walked beside them — turning a simple morning into something you actually remember.

This is what our Discover Mowgli program is all about — where children step into the forest, explore on foot, take safe, cool dips in the Ramganga, and witness the wild as it unfolds, sometimes even an elephant herd crossing the river.

If this is your kind of summer, we’d love to welcome you to Vanghat.

Some experiences stay with you — especially when children truly begin to enjoy nature in their own way.

It was wonderful to host this lovely family again at Vanghat, and this time for the Discover Mowgli Program. Watching the kids step away from screens, explore the forest, and stay deeply engaged throughout — that’s exactly what this program is meant to create. And when parents get to witness these moments, it becomes even more meaningful.

Both parents are highly respected professionals — Supreme Court Advocates and nature and wildlife enthusiasts — working closely with nature in their own way, which made their experience here even more special to share.

Thank you for trusting us again and for your kind words. It truly means a lot.

With summer holidays just around the corner and Discover Mowgli now started, this is the perfect time for children to explore, learn, and build a real connection with nature — while creating memories that stay with them for a long time.

Some weekends are not meant to be rushed.
They are meant to be felt.

As Good Friday and Easter approach, we wish you a peaceful and meaningful long weekend — wherever you choose to be.

This Easter weekend, as destinations fill up and noise grows louder, there is still a place where mornings begin with river sounds, and days unfold slowly under the forest canopy.

At Vanghat, the experience is different.
No crowds. No pressure. Just space — to walk, to observe, to breathe.

While the long weekend brings movement everywhere else, here it brings stillness.
And in that stillness, the forest reveals itself quietly — in bird calls, soft light, and moments you don’t have to chase.

If you’ve been wanting a few quiet days in nature, this is a good time to come.

Limited availability for the Easter weekend.
Reach out to plan your stay.
