The couple were no strangers to the jungle. They had stayed with us before and had wisely chosen the Treehouse overlooking the waterhole, the very same Treehouse from whose balcony they had once watched Dot, the resident tigress, emerge from the forest and drink at the water's edge.
That night, alarm calls echoed through the darkness. Spotted deer called nervously, and then the forest fell silent, only to erupt once more. To experienced wildlife enthusiasts, such sounds tell a story. Somewhere in the darkness, a predator was moving.
They retired early, determined to be on the balcony before dawn.
Wrapped in warm shawls against the morning chill and cradling steaming mugs of coffee, they settled into their vigil as the first light crept across the grasslands in front of the Treehouse. Curiously, the forest had fallen quiet. No alarm calls. No warning notes. Nothing.
Then… they noticed a movement!
At first, it was merely a dark shape slipping through the thicket. Easy enough to dismiss as a shadow playing tricks under the first rays of the sun. But then the shape emerged.
A black panther!
Few sights in the Indian jungle can rival the elegance of that animal. It seemed to float rather than walk, gliding through the forest with the effortless grace of a creature born from shadow itself. Without a sound it passed the waterhole, crossed the clearing, and vanished into the jungle once more.
The encounter lasted only moments. Yet for those fortunate enough to witness it, it would remain etched in memory forever
Excitedly, they shared the story with other guests over bush breakfast under the large fig tree deep in the woods. There was only one sensible thing to do after that. Check the camera traps near the Treehouse
And sure enough, the silent ghost of the forest had been captured perfectly.
This is why people return to Jungle Retreat Wayanad. Not because sightings are guaranteed, but because every dawn holds the possibility that the jungle may decide to reveal one of its secrets.
