Independence Day

India became independent from British rule on 15
August 1947, after a long freedom struggle led by
countless heroes, including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas
Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,
Jawaharlal Nehru, and many others.

Why is 15 August important

1947: India gained independence from British rule.
Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous "Tryst with
Destiny" speech on the eve of independence.

The Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red
Fort in New Delhi each year.

The day honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters and
celebrates India's unity, diversity, democracy, and
progress.
