The pool comes into its own -
You would not expect it, but this is when the pool is at its best. The crowds are gone, and the water is still warm. September mornings steam like a small lake in winter mist. The nights turn to stars.
A couple floats in the lit water, looking up, and the luckiest catch a falling star. I like to imagine the wish they make is the wish not to leave.

My friend who comes every month.
She rises behind Monte Stivo, in full, and keeps me company until morning. We have been doing this for twenty years now. She mirrors herself in the pool until the picture doubles, and for a while there are two of everything.
When she leaves, I do not know whose nights she goes to light. But I am not jealous. In a few weeks she will be back, here, with me.

A scent is the fastest way back, faster than a photograph, faster than a song. It does not remind you of the feeling. It hands the feeling back to you, whole.
Each of our suites now has its own fragrance, chosen in Florence from a pharmacy making scents since 1561. A door that opens backwards, and those who want to can take it home.

THE LAST ONE TO LEAVE THE VINES

By evening the pickers have gone, the bicycles wobbling home down the lane. He is the owner, and he does one last round, his eyes wandering to the pergolas that this morning were heavy with grapes and are now empty, everything safe in the cellar.
They arrive, they work, they go home. I stay. Someone has to be here when the vineyard goes quiet again, and it is always me.

The day the country stops.
On the fifteenth of August, Italy closes. For a few hours the only people still working seem to be waiters and priests.
But here this date is a turning point. After it, the great heat breaks, the light softens, the crowds thin out. The season I love most begins, and runs all the way into October.
Not the busiest, not the hottest. The best.

Before anyone is awake.
It starts with one blackbird, then another, until the dark is full of them, though it is not yet light. The trees arrive first, then the lawn under its skin of dew. The mountains show up in the pool. The first sun paints the peaks red.
The world is asleep and I am the only one awake to watch it. Some mornings I think it is the best thing I have.
