Matilda, mia cara,
ti scrivo questa lunga lettera a pochi giorni dal mio novantaduesimo compleanno, mentre tu hai quasi quattro anni e ancora non sai cosa sia l'alfabeto. Spero che tu possa leggerla nel pieno della tua giovinezza.
Ti scrivo alla cieca, sia in senso letterale sia in senso figurato. In senso letterale perché negli ultimi anni la vista mi ha letteralmente abbandonato. Ora non posso più né leggere né scrivere, posso solo dettare. In senso figurato perché non riesco a immaginarmi quale sarà il mondo fra vent'anni. [...] Ma perché sento il bisogno di scriverti?
Rispondo alla mia stessa domanda con una certa amarezza: perché ho piena coscienza, per raggiunti limiti di età, che mi sarà negato il piacere di vederti maturare di giorno in giorno, di ascoltare i tuoi primi ragionamenti, di seguire la crescita del tuo cervello. Insomma, mi sarà impossibile parlare e dialogare con te.
Allora queste mie righe vogliono essere una povera sostituzione di quel dialogo che mai avverrà tra di noi.
