IL TROVATELLO PLUTO

I was going to the Gubbio Coop as I did almost every day. It was sometime ago.
The Coop and Pam supermarkets were the only two that existed in those days. The Coop was much closer than Pam, which still exists; opposite Digit where we bought our kitchen appliances from, Claudio and his family, his shop crowded with customers ignoring the special offers of the supermarket opposite.
I was on my way to the Coop. Now it is Conad I go to, which has a larger assortment of international organic vegetarian food and above all, is much closer.
I was taking the lesser used road, passing fields and allotments, shacks and fenced fiels where horses roamed, avoiding the main road which is the road to Rome.
Avoiding the traffic and... the Carabinieri.
Halfway there along the narrow road among the sunflower fields, there was a tall, rusty gate guarding a rundown shack.
I noticed him immediately tied with a rope to the bars outside the gate. Lying there with his head on his large paws, his floppy ears, his long speckled body at one with the earth, the hot July sun beating down on him. An abandoned hunting dog- a very common sight in the Umbrian countryside especially in summer, when families go down South for their holidays and abandon their pets midway.
I stopped the car and walked up to him saying the words I always say:”Ciao Amore, what are you doing here?”.
He didn’t move a muscle- simply raised his big eyes to look at me for a moment and close them again.
I left him there and went to do my Coop shopping, thinking of him in the sun without water. How long had he been there? On the way back there he was exactly as I had left him an hour ago. He climbed into the trunk of my Fiat 600, a tight fit for his big body without any fuss. His head bent with that undefinable air of all the abandoned dogs we have picked up. Shame? Shyness? Or “I wish I could disappear”?.
The children were delighted to introduce him to Shanty and Axel, the two dogs, and all the cats who lived with us.
Pluto was the sweetest gentlest of dogs, making friends with the cats but running up to bark at the clucking pheasants who came to nestle in the bushes just outside the fence near Alberto’s Studio.
The sofa in the TV room was perennially occupied by Liam the only male cat and by Pluto's long, slender body, big muddied paws, his large ears flopping over the side of the sofa.
Our summer ended in October. We had to take old Axel and Shanti with us to Milan, sadly leaving Pluto behind in Nadia's hands.
Nadia came to feed him everyday. Fortunately our departure corresponded with the arrival of Terence Hill who had chosen one of the cottages on the property for his stay while filming the detective series Don Matteo for Italian television. Both of them shared the quiet peace of our hilltop home with it's large garden. Pluto was a hunting dog so he loved walking with Terence up to the thicket and to the lake behind the house.
He also loved to dig large holes under the hedge and run into the fields and the stream catching the scent of wild boar, deer and pheasants.
Early morning he stood below Terence’s window and barked till he was given a piece of bread, even when Terence had filmed a night scene and would probably had preferred to sleep in late.
Pluto was with us for a couple of years.
I had been away for six weeks to Pakistan to visit my family and on my way home, at Rome airport waiting my flight to Milan, I rang Nadia and asked her about Pluto and the cats.
“Pluto has disappeared” she said.
He didn’t come back even for his meals.
"When?!" I asked with a sinking heart, all the pleasure of having spent time with my family vanished immediately.
"Since yesterday".
A few days later while many from the village were looking for him he was found on the bottom of the hill, sprawled out on at the edge of the stream, his muddied body, half in the water and half out, trying desperatly to to quench his thirst after dragging himself across and down the fields.
He has been poisoned with strychnine by truffle hunters, who roam those areas frequently during the short truffle season.
An autopsy was performed to confirm the vet's doubts.
So ended Pluto's short stay in Villa Shireen.
And he was cremated.
His ashes strewn in the garden he loved.
Ho telefonato a tutti; canile, veterinario, senza avere risultati.

Have you ever wondered why Villa Shireen has this unusual name?
Twenty years ago, our great grandmother who was called "Shireen"( in persian it means "Sweet", and she was the mother of our maternal grandmother, Maimoona)
arrived in Gubbio for the first time and said to Maimoona: "this place is like the desert".
And Maimoona replied: " Mother, how can you say that, with all these trees and green fields and hills!".
grandma said:" I meant that this place reminds me of the solitude and spirituality you can feel and find in the desert".
She came back to Gubbio many times and fell in love with this place, with the tall cypresses, the ancient oaks, gathering wild flowers on her walks.
Once, when we celebrated her 80th birthday she spent 8 months in Villa Shireen.
She returned home in Karachi and came back to Gubbio briefly.
Grandma Shireen's last words from hospital to Maimuna were : " please come to Karachi and take me back to Gubbio, I’m waiting for you, I want to be buried in your garden".
Maimoona said to her: "Mother you can’t come here right now, they won’t let you” .
Maimuna never saw her mother again.
She decided to change the name of the property in the memory of her beloved mother from Località Monticelli to "VILLA SHIREEN".

19 luglio:

July 19
Another very hot day, and the children jump in and out of the pool to cool off. Five year old Alby is in love with his older girlfriend.
Blonde,blue eyed and very pretty.
You may remember that before hibernating Our Hermit Hero Greg left us a list of what he could and couldn't eat.
Small portions of very simple vegetables fruit, all organic of course.
Maimuna thinks that this is too little for him and loads the basket which we leave for him at the head of the stairs leading down to the hermitage with extras like Little Red Riding Hood,s mother made up for grandma.
But the real news for friends of Villa Shireen is that the fig tree over looking the swimming pool is loaded with great, big, fat, sweet, black, juicy FIGS much before they usually appear.
The same has happened with the spreading plum tree with green ,honey-sweet plums which carpet the grass under the loaded branches.
Often in the evening when all are asleep Maimuna makes small batches of jam with lemons and fragrant spices using her mother Shireen,s family recipe. In Sindhi and Urdu it is called "Murabba"
This murabba has it,s devoted fans so at the end of the season she often has over sixty jars lined up to present to the expectant fans.

Greg's lunch box!

17 luglio:

July 17:
A very hot day. The organic wheat and spelt fields around us like fields of gold under a blue cloudless sky, but our personal unique hermit has began his two weeks of hybernation in Berty's studio at the bottom of the garden.
after tourning off all devices and cutting off all communication from the outside world, he's going to meditate, practise his particular form of yoga for several hours a day.
Greg is our unique hero, he has tought us many important things in the short time he has been here. The night before his retreat started, he came in to say goodbye to us, giving us a frugal list, of foods that he allowed him self to eat during this period. When Maimuna saw this letter she almost had a fit: no onions, no garlic, no spices - how can a pakistani cook without this basic ingredients?!-
That last evening Greg convinced Sofia and Viola to resist the temptation of using their smartphone and watching television for 12 hours and to experiment how it feels to sit upstraight without bending heads and shoulder.
