For centuries, Porta Rudiae has marked one of the historic entrances to Lecce, taking its name from the ancient road that once led towards the city of Rudiae.

Its appearance evolved alongside Lecce itself. Originally a medieval fortified gate, it was transformed during the Baroque period into something far more representative: an elegant monument designed to welcome those entering the city.

The version we see today dates back to 1703, when Prospero Lubelli envisioned a “galante e gentile” entrance to Lecce.

More than three centuries later, Porta Rudiae remains one of the most distinctive ways to step into the history of the city.
