Bridging distant worlds: what happens when we step outside the office 🌲🎒

Take a look at this photo: we are in the woods of Bovino, little village in Puglia. At first glance, it might look like a simple hike, but it’s actually much more than that.

In Bovino, we are currently coordinating a local empowerment process focused on entrepreneurship and ecological transition. And since our work takes us to different territories every single month, we did what we love to do most: we invited the people currently living in our house in Matera to come along with us.

We truly love bridging worlds that are usually distant or rarely communicate with each other. On one side, our guests—remote workers, digital nomads, creatives, and curious travelers from all over the globe. On the other side, the social fabric of the territories where we operate: local citizens, businesses, and public administrations.

Sharing daily life at Casa Netural during and after computer work is wonderful, but bringing our guests into the field feels like the best way to deeply immerse them in the local culture. For them, it’s a unique chance to understand a territory from the inside; for the local communities, it’s a powerful opportunity to exchange ideas with fresh, international perspectives.

👇 Have you ever found yourself completely immersed in the authentic life of a local town while traveling or working remotely, connecting directly with the people who live there? What was that experience like? Let us know in the comments.

💬 P.S. Our coliving is an open door that connects you straight to local communities. Beyond our main hubs in Matera and Gorizia, we are constantly on the move in various regions. If you want to know where we are right now, what we are building, and how you can join our next field trips, drop us a DM or email us at [email protected]!

Home pieces 🏠✨

What is it that truly makes a place feel like “home”? Is it the furniture? The walls? Or is it the stories of the people who pass through?

Today, for our ongoing column, we want to share a very special piece of our coliving space. This artwork is a precious gift from Clara, French illustrator and graphic designer who lived with us.

If you look closely at Clara Petiteau’s vibrant illustrations, you won’t just see a drawing—you’ll see the memory of a shared chapter of life. It captures our team, our beloved Matera, and, in the distance, the rural village of Grottole (where Andrea, our co-founder, launched the urban regeneration project ). But above all, it holds the memories of days spent together with Maxim from France, Dave from Japan, and so many other colivers who crossed paths right here.

Casa Netural was born from this exact vision: a stubborn idea of community. A crossroads where one of the oldest cities in the world meets the vibrant energy of people arriving from every corner of the planet to work, connect, and inspire one another.

Which brings us back to our opening question, because we’d love to hear your thoughts:
👇 To you, what does the word “HOME” really mean? Is it a physical place, or is it a mindset shaped by the people around you? Let us know in the comments.

💬 P.S. If you’d love to experience coliving in a vibrant international community, remote work from this inspiring atmosphere, and explore the rural charm of Grottole, our doors are open. Drop us a DM or email us at [email protected]

A curiosity about : did you know it is one of the world’s most radical examples of “Negative Architecture”? 👷‍♂️🏛️

When you look at this view of the ancient city, you aren’t looking at buildings constructed “on top” of the land. You are witnessing the result of the exact opposite process.

What is “Negative Architecture”?
Unlike traditional construction that adds materials (bricks, cement) to a space, the inhabitants here worked through subtraction.

In Matera, the historic districts and the dwellings are called “Sassi” (literally meaning “Rocks”). This name exists because they weren’t “built” in the conventional sense—they were “extracted.” Living here meant carving voids into the solid calcarenite rock, removing stone to create functional volumes.

𝐀 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲
These dwellings were inhabited for millennia until the 1950s, when they were evacuated and the population was relocated to new, modern districts outside the historic center. After decades of abandonment, the ancient city was recovered. Today, due to its complex vertical layout, it has evolved into a vibrant hub of hospitality and traditional crafts. Yet, it remains a place deeply frequented by the local community and a living laboratory of human adaptation.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞
We are located in one of those “new” historic neighborhoods created during that great transformation. When we welcome someone to Casa Netural, we love to show them both sides of the city: the ancient roots of the Sassi and the vibrant life of the modern districts. Understanding Matera means inhabiting both its silence and its evolution.

Matera is a vertical labyrinth where your floor is often someone else’s rooftop. 🏛️✨

Getting lost in its narrow alleys and “vicinati” (small shared courtyards) is an incredibile way to feel the pulse of this city. It’s a place that forces you to slow down and look closer.

One minute you are enjoying a craft drink or a local dinner in a vibrant square; the next, you are stepping into a “Casa Grotta.” These cave dwellings, inhabited until the 1960s, tell a story of resilience and a way of life that feels like another world entirely. 🕰️

But look up. Beyond the stone, the sky belongs to the “Falchi Grillai” (Lesser Kestrels). Their sharp cries are the soundtrack of the Sassi, a wild reminder of the deep connection between this urban miracle and the surrounding nature. 🦅

Matera is not a museum to be visited in a day. It’s an ecosystem of social innovation, civic imagination, and deep-rooted history. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve found your way out of the labyrinth.

Have you ever visited a place that felt like a journey through time? Share your thoughts below! 👇

Who’s behind the door at Casa Netural? 🏠✨

We often get asked: "Who will I actually meet when I arrive at the coliving?" Well, here we are. We are the micro-community that looks after the space, but more importantly, we nurture the connections that happen within these walls 🥰

For us, coliving isn’t just a place to stay. It’s about having the to be yourself. It’s about seeing the world through someone else’s eyes, cultivating new , and tasting flavors you’ve never tried before. It’s about listening to life stories, sharing passions, and exchanging skills—sometimes over a desk, but more often over a shared meal or a walk.

We aren't just "managers." We are practical dreamers, hikers, and activists. We are the ones who will point you toward the trail less traveled or introduce you to a local project that stays hidden from the maps.

Swipe through to meet the team:

👉 Andrea, main coordinator of our project, architect and enthusiast social entrepreneur with the aim to regenerate rural areas.

International Community Dinner 🥗🥰
Together with our local community and special guests we discovered many stories and recipes, such as “Borsh”: a typical recipe from Ukraine prepared by our guest 🇺🇦

Have you ever tasted it 😋?
Let us know in the comments👇

Historically rooted in Ukraine (and now prptected by UNESCO!), it’s a symbol of heritage and comfort. The magic comes from the beets, which give it a stunning red color.

And besides this one, we discovered and tasted many other delicacies prepared by the participants.
