Scultura realizzata in bronzo con la tecnica della fusione a cera persa, con base in marmo travertino romano Leonardo, il genio fiorentino si ingegnò in ogni disciplina, anche nella scultura, e come in ogni sua opera, vi si dedicò cercando di dare il massimo. Ci provò a Milano con una monumentale statua equestre per Francesco Sforza per la quale realizzò un grande modello in creta (tra il 1482 e il 1493) di ben sette metri di altezza. Quando tutto fu pronto per la fusione – che avrebbe impiegato oltre 100 tonnellate di bronzo – l’arrivo delle truppe francesi nel capoluogo lombardo, motivò lo spostamento di tutto quel metallo alla fusione dei cannoni. Il sogno di Leonardo svanì e di quel sogno oggi noi vi mostriamo questa testimonianza (dimensioni: h. 58 x l. 53 cm x p. 22).

A bronze sculpture created using the lost-wax casting technique, with a base in Roman travertine marble Leonardo, the Florentine genius, excelled in every discipline, including sculpture, and as with all his works, he devoted himself to it, striving to achieve the very best. He attempted this in Milan with a monumental equestrian statue for Francesco Sforza, for which he created a large clay model (between 1482 and 1493) standing a full seven metres tall. When everything was ready for casting – a process that would have required over 100 tonnes of bronze – the arrival of French troops in the Lombard capital led to all that metal being diverted to the casting of cannons. Leonardo’s dream vanished, and today we present this artefact as a testament to that dream.
