🇮🇹 Have you ever wondered what lies behind the open doors of Naples’ Spanish Quarter?

They are called “bassi” — or ‘e vasci in Neapolitan — small street-level homes that have been part of everyday life in Naples for centuries.

Walk through the Spanish Quarter and you’ll see them everywhere: doors opening directly onto narrow alleys, chairs outside, neighbours chatting and, especially on warm summer days, people sitting outside to enjoy some fresh air and a little more space.

Sometimes a simple greeting turns into a conversation — and perhaps even a coffee. ☕

The bassi are not just a picturesque feature of Naples. They are real homes, and they tell a fascinating story about the city, its people and the unique relationship between private life and the street.

Naples Underground or Neapolis Sotterrata? They are not the same thing! 👇

Their entrances are just a few steps apart, in the heart of Naples’ historic centre, but they offer two very different experiences.

Napoli Sotterranea takes you around 40 metres below the city, through ancient cisterns, aqueducts, narrow tunnels and World War II air-raid shelters.

Neapolis Sotterrata, beneath the monumental complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore, takes you instead into the ancient Greek and Roman city, where streets, shops and the remains of the old market are still visible beneath modern Naples.

So, which one should you visit?
Our answer is simple: if you have time, visit both.

In our new blog article, we explain the differences, what to expect, how long the visits take and share a few practical tips from Hotel Il Convento.

Discover the city above... and below! 😊

🏛️ Have you ever stepped inside an ancient Roman water cistern?

Hidden beneath Bacoli, in the heart of the Phlegraean Fields, lies one of the most surprising Roman sites near Naples: Piscina Mirabilis.

Built during the Augustan age to supply water to the Roman fleet stationed at Misenum, this enormous underground cistern is divided by 48 massive pillars, creating five long aisles that make it look almost like a subterranean cathedral.

And that's only part of the story. Piscina Mirabilis can also be the starting point for a fascinating day exploring Bacoli, Miseno and Baia, combining archaeology, sea and extraordinary landscapes.

In our new blog article, we tell you its history, how to visit it, how to get there from Naples and what else to see nearby.

🍝 Have you ever tried Pasta alla Genovese in Naples?

Despite its name, Genovese is one of the most traditional dishes of Neapolitan cuisine — and one of the best ways to discover a side of Naples that goes far beyond pizza.

Onions slowly cooked for hours, meat and pasta come together in a recipe that, for many Neapolitans, tastes of Sunday lunches, family traditions and memories.

But why is it called Genovese if it comes from Naples? What is the traditional pasta used for it? And, most importantly... where can you eat a good Genovese in Naples? 😋

In our new blog article, we explore its history and traditions and share some places where you can try it — including vegan versions.
