In 1889, Queen Margherita of Italy visited the city of Naples together with her husband, King Umberto I. During her stay, she was served a pizza that was supposed to represent the colors of the Italian flag: green basil, white mozzarella and red tomatoes. This pizza was prepared by the pizza chef Raffaele Esposito and named "Pizza Margherita" in honor of the queen. The history of this pizza is considered a key moment that made pizza popular in its current form, even though similar pizzas existed before.
