🇮🇹 ACCADDE OGGI A ROMA
Il 10 Settembre 1586 l'Obelisco Vaticano viene finalmente rialzato, per volere di Papa Sisto V e sotto la direzione dell'architetto Domenico Fontana.
Visti i pericoli inerenti al lavoro, viene diramato l'ordine agli operai e alla folla di non fiatare: per chiunque lanci il minimo grido è prevista la pena di morte.
L'obelisco è quasi a posto quando si vedono le funi surriscaldarsi pericolosamente, con il rischio che prendano fuoco. Allora nel gran silenzio si leva una voce temeraria a gridare: "Acqua alle funi!"
Il marinaio Benedetto Bresca viene subito arrestato, ma Sisto V come ricompensa invece della punizione gli regala larghi favori, compreso il diritto di issare la bandiera pontificia sul suo bastimento ed il privilegio di fornire alla Chiesa di San Pietro le palme per la Settimana Santa.
🇬🇧 ON THIS DAY IN ROME
On September 10th 1586 the Vatican Obelisk was finally raised, at the behest of Pope Sixtus V and under the direction of the architect Domenico Fontana.
Because of the dangers inherent in work, orders were issued to the workers and the crowds not to breathe a word: for anyone shouting the slightest scream, the death penalty was imposed.
The obelisk was almost in place when the ropes started overheating dangerously, with the risk of them burning. Then, in the great silence, a reckless voice started to shout: "Water on the ropes!"
The sailor Benedetto Bresca was immediately arrested, but Sixtus V as a reward instead of punishment gave him wide favors, including the right to hoist the papal flag over his bastion and the privilege of providing the Church of St. Peter with palm trees for the Holy Week.
