The Beehive, Rome

The Beehive, Rome A home away from home for travelers to Rome since 1999 šŸ šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ Ciao! We are Steve and Linda, an American couple who opened The Beehive on 11 May 1999.

Determined to follow a dream, we packed up our apartment in Los Angeles and, along with our very large cat, Ingmar, and a Swiss army knife, moved to Rome to open The Beehive. The Beehive is a cozy, eco hostel with heart. It is essentially an extension of ourselves and inspired by the things in life we find truly important: people and their stories and care for our world and the environment. The B

eehive, is more than just a place to lay your head – we’re also travel experts. We provide the best locally sourced information to our guests as well as a clean, comfortable, and safe place to stay. We truly believe in the transformative power of travel and its ability to create connection and understanding. Thank you for including us on your journey!

A lot of people don’t know what our hostel actually looks like so this is the first in a series where I show you the different room types we have as well as our common areas. I’m starting off with our rooms with shared bathroom, which are combination of dormitory rooms and private rooms. I hope this series will convince some of you to give hostels a try!

Back in the day when we started The Beehive we were so hyper focused on building our business and raising our daughters that connecting with hostel colleagues wasn’t possible. In the last several years we’ve been making a more concerted effort to connect with all the fabulous people who are in this unique industry. Shout out to Lior and Robert of and for organizing these great meetups. Hostel Connect No. 4 in Rome was a reminder of why this community is so special. Nobody gets it quite like the people in this very particular corner of the accommodation world. Honored to have had all these lovely folks in our city. Go check out their amazing hostels! šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

As of today it’s €2 to access the area near the main basin of the Trevi fountain from 09:00 to 22:00 every day except Mondays when the basin is being cleaned so entrance starts at 14:00 and on Fridays at 11:30. Numbers are limited into the area so should be a more pleasant experience. Tickets can be purchased near the fountain. Free entrance for Rome residents.

I’m working at reception. It’s lunchtime. The Greek yogurt I mixed with berries and muesli just didn’t cut it. I’m still hungry. While it’s an easy thing to have while I’m working, it’s a sad little lunch. Instead I’m thinking of more delicious meals I’ve had like this one at one of my faves Renovated old school style serving traditional dishes in the non-touristy Torpignattara neighborhood. Right next door and sharing a kitchen is also one of my favorite pizzerias in Rome

Our social walks are a great way for our guests to meet each other and fellow travelers through our inclusion of this event in Linkups on the app. Guests staying at nearby hostels can also join even if they aren’t staying with us. Walks are kept on the small side and the cost is €10 that goes directly to and for our volunteer staff member who leads the walk. Keep in mind this is not a tour. See our gorgeous city at night and make new friends! Events like these are one of the many things that is all about!

One of our favorite restaurants in Rome, which we often recommend, is located just past this ancient arch. Since Steve and I first opened our hostel, we’ve always had some version of what we call ā€œThe Beehive Recommends.ā€ These were the days before social media and Google when guests would ask us where they should eat or what they should do after visiting some of the more famous sights or if we had any ideas for gifts they could bring back for family or friends.

Our suggestions were initially in a PDF, then evolved into a printed guide, and later became an app in 2015. Things have changed again, and not many people want to download an app anymore, especially one they will only use for a few days.

We’ve now switched to Google Map lists, featuring four different maps: one with our recommendations for eats and drinks, another highlighting lesser-known, overlooked museums, churches, and archaeological sites, and one with our suggestions for places to shop for gifts and souvenirs. There’s also one that shows nearby locations of pharmacies, grocery stores, etc.

As travel continues to change, one thing remains constant: our desire for guests to enjoy delicious food, explore fascinating places, and support local businesses. We hope our suggestions contribute to making their time in our wonderful city truly unforgettable! ✨
