🌊 Palma de Sols Insiders — September in Calasetta

Our Palma de Sols Insiders Sara & Cristian enjoying a swim in the crystal-clear water of Le Saline, Calasetta. 💙

The best part? It’s September, the temperature is around 32°C, and there are no summer crowds — just clear water, space and that peaceful island feeling. ☀️

This is one of the reasons we love late summer in Sant’Antioco: warm days often continue well into autumn, with pleasant weather that can last through October and even into November.

Sometimes September feels like having Sardinia almost to yourself. 🌴

🍷 Palma de Sols Insiders at the Carignano W**e Festival

Last August, our Palma de Sols Insiders Evelyn & Massimio spent an evening at the Carignano W**e Festival in Sant’Antioco, held on the waterfront on 22 August 2026. 🍇✨

The festival was the final event of Sant’Antioco’s summer w**e programme, bringing together Carignano w**es produced on the island, local food and live music along the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo.

And here’s what makes the local w**e particularly special: on the island of Sant’Antioco, some Carignano vines are still grown piede franco — on their own roots rather than grafted onto American rootstock. The island’s sandy soils helped protect these vineyards from phylloxera, allowing a rare form of traditional viticulture to survive. 🍷🌿

So a glass of Carignano del Sulcis here is more than just a local w**e — it’s part of the agricultural history and identity of the island.

🌅 SUNRISE ON THE SANT’ANTIOCO WATERFRONT

This morning I went for a walk along the Sant’Antioco waterfront to have breakfast overlooking the lagoon. ☕🥐

The marina was still quiet, the boats almost motionless and the first morning light was reflecting across the water. ⛵✨

One of those simple moments that makes you slow down and enjoy the island before the day really begins.

🌴 CAVES TO EXPLORE FROM PALMA DE SOLS

Sant’Antioco is famous for its sea, but some of the most fascinating places in Southwest Sardinia are hidden underground. 🪨✨

Starting from Palma de Sols, you can easily plan a day exploring caves, mining landscapes and spectacular rock formations:

🕳️ Grotte Is Zuddas — 36 min
Near Santadi, with a visitor route through ancient limestone formations and extraordinary aragonite “cave flowers”.

🪨 Grotta San Giovanni — 40 min
Near Domusnovas, a huge natural tunnel running through the mountain, once crossed by a road and today explored on foot.

⛏️ Grotta di Santa Barbara — 36 min
Hidden inside the San Giovanni mine near Iglesias. The visit includes part of the old mining infrastructure before reaching its impressive underground chamber.

💧 Grotta di Su Mannau — 1 h 10 min
Near Fluminimaggiore, one of the most remarkable cave systems in the area, with underground lakes, stalactites and large chambers.

🌊 Cala Grotta — 20 min
Right on the island of Sant’Antioco: a dramatic sea-carved rocky inlet, perfect for discovering the wilder side of the coast.

From 20 minutes to just over one hour from Palma de Sols, there’s a whole underground world waiting to be explored.

Our Palma de Sols Insiders Simone & Elisa explored the spectacular Iglesiente coast, one of the wildest and most dramatic stretches of southwestern Sardinia. 🌊⛰️

Here the landscape is shaped by towering cliffs, hidden coves, sea caves and incredibly clear water, with traces of the area’s long mining history never far away.

A perfect day trip from Sant’Antioco for anyone who wants to discover a more rugged and adventurous side of Sardinia. 💙

🌴 FESTA DI NOSTRA SIGNORA DI BONARIA — SANT’ANTIOCO

From 4 to 6 September 2026, Sant’Antioco celebrates Nostra Signora di Bonaria, Patron Saint of Sardinia and a figure traditionally linked to sailors and the sea. ⛵✨

For three days, the town comes alive with religious celebrations, music, local traditions and food.

🎶 Friday 4 September — Tazenda live in concert
🍰 Saturday 5 September — traditional Sagra del Dolce and evening entertainment
⛵ Sunday 6 September — the highlight of the celebrations, with the procession by sea, followed by the procession through the town with folk groups, horse riders and the local band. The evening ends with fireworks at 21:45.

A beautiful chance to experience a different side of Sant’Antioco and discover one of its most heartfelt traditions. 💙

🌴 PALMA DE SOLS — A NAME THAT CONNECTS SANT’ANTIOCO TO SPAIN

The name Palma de Sols carries us back to one of the most important turning points in Sardinian history.

🇪🇸 In 1297, Pope Boniface VIII formally granted the Crown of Aragon the right to conquer Sardinia and Corsica. But the actual Aragonese expedition to Sardinia began years later.

⛵ On 9 June 1323, a Catalan-Aragonese fleet commanded by Infante Alfonso, son of King James II of Aragon, sailed from Port Mahon in Menorca towards Sardinia.

And its destination was recorded as Palma de Sols — the island of Sant’Antioco.

From that moment, Sardinia gradually became part of the political world of the Crown of Aragon, and later of the Spanish Monarchy. Catalan and Spanish influence would remain deeply connected with the island for centuries.

📜 This is the historical context in which names such as “Palma de Sols” and forms connected with Palma de Sulcis appear in the sources.

So the connection with Spain is not simply linguistic: Sant’Antioco stood at the very beginning of the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia in 1323.

A small island at the centre of a much larger Mediterranean story. 🌊
