We're a family-run organic farm + B&B in the Apennine mountains of central Italy: heritage fruit varieties, olive groves, vineyards, vegetables, milk goats, donkey. Località il Piano is a working family farm run by Adolfo Rosati and Darcy Gordon, located in the Apennine mountains of central Italy, just outside of Spoleto in Umbria. The fields and house were in ruins when we bought the property and

we've been working since 2001 to rebuild the farmhouse, opening the upper floor of it as an agriturismo/B&B in 2008. We've planted several hectares of fruit, olives and grapes, a permaculture "forest garden", vegetables, a garden of medicinal and culinary herbs and flowers, focusing on heritage varieties and crops which produce well without any chemical treatments or fertilizers. We've been certified organic since 2004, but feel that there is much more than the buzzword "organic" that makes our food special. We try to combine the best aspects of traditional local agriculture (low waste, low input, saving seed) with the best ideas and practices in modern agriculture (disease-resistant cultivars, drip irrigation, post-harvest management), working to achieve a sustainable system. Both of us are passionate about sustainable agriculture and enjoy hosting guests and WWOOFers who are interested in the subject.

Spring has snuck up on us again, bringing 20 eggs a day, daffodils and lots of baby ruminants. Fafa's Christmas peacocks went feral (an expensive "oops") so we're searching for a pair of geese for him. Ben won some medals in karate but has refrained from practicing on Fafa. Adolfo's looking forward to the spring round of wild edible plants classes. Darcy loves watching Tilde the cow scythe through the spring grass and is starting to crave strawberries with Jersey cream :)

Eccoci! Family portrait by WWOOFer Haley, a kitchen-window's view of the first snow on Mt. Coscerno, and fresh mozzarella taking a dip in the bring tank. Cheese experiments continue, raptors are picking off our chickens, the kids are doing fine in swimming/karate/school, Adolfo is teaching a class on making acorn bread this weekend, and 30 Americans will be here for Thanksgiving. And so proceeds life at Località il Piano!

Newest residents at Località il Piano: Tilde the wonder cow and Annika her spunky calf (who nearly gave my elbow a hickey this morning - do we need a calf-sized pacifier?). Ben is thoroughly impressed by Tilde's truck driver burps and Fa enjoys frolicking and cuddling with Annika. Our minds are boggled that Tilde turns shrubs and grass into 4 gallons of rich Jersey milk every day, feeding the rest of us: people, chickens, cats and dog. Our forearms are aching but our taste buds are happy :)

We're back in the farming groove: watering trees, milking goats, harvesting fruit, jamming! We all enjoyed some time off at the Spoleto Festival events last week at the opera, dance and concerts in the Roman amphitheater. There are 74 eggs in the incubator, a treehouse in the works, friends coming to visit soon, rapidly growing watermelons in the garden and lots to look forward to this summer.

The top two things that Ben and Fa associate with Missouri are bacon and maple syrup (we've made friends with pig farmers and maple tappers). Then, all the novel aspects of "city life": checking out lots of books from the amazing Columbia Public Library, biking everywhere, sampling fast food, making the rounds of local playgrounds, enjoying the incredible gifted kids program here, visiting museums and the zoo, having time to just plain hang out with other kids after school. It's an urban wonderland and they are happy. Life is so easy and comfortable: I fear we are all getting spoiled! 4 more months of leisure before we're back on-farm with Orso and the new baby goats.

We're roasting, us and our sweetcorn and our new potatoes all together. Fa says it's popsicle weather. [And the two wonderfully cool days of rain last week were pancake weather, he says, with train-shaped pancakes of course.] The fireflies keep us company in the evenings and the boys have been learning to swim in the irrigation pond. Friends have adopted all our chickens, ducks, goose, dog, cats, goats and sheep, and we're starting to pack up for the grand Missouri adventure.

Spring produce is wonderful! Our bellies are full of asparagus, artichokes, strawberries, peas, fava beans, the first few cherries, lots of eggs and goat cheese. Nonno Doug arrives tomorrow for a visit and we're gearing up for a lot of birthday cakes in the couple of weeks: Ben turns 8 (chocolate-vanilla layers), Darcy turns 40 (something involving cream cheese frosting), Fa turns 5 (chocolate pudding) and Nonno Doug turns 72 (coconut cake)!

Spring has definitely sprung in the hills of Umbria. Baby goats are leaping in the pastures, wildflowers are blooming in the orchards,
Adolfo is out grafting cherries and Ben is busy seeding sweetcorn. 8 or liters a day of goat milk are morphing into yogurt, peppercorn cheese, ricotta and caprino: a time-consuming but delicious transformation! Adolfo was awarded a Fulbright to do some agroforestry research at the University of Missouri, so we have an adventure to look forward to next fall.

We had a great New Years, actually taking some time off from all things agricultural. We drank lots of mulled cider, shot flaming arrows and very much enjoyed the company of our visiting American friends.

Time for the olive harvest! We're cleaning crates, finding ladders, patching nets and picking-bags. Anyone who wants to come help pick Sat or Sun (07-08 Nov) is most welcome! Here are some photos of Fafa, the collector of "lovely" leaves, and Ben-the-Viking (yes, those are genuine goat horns duct-taped to his head).
