Why are there so many wells in Venice? 💧

Look closely as you walk through Venice and you'll notice them everywhere.

In the middle of a campo, tucked inside a courtyard or standing quietly beside an ancient building, you'll often find a stone well.

But why would a city surrounded by water need so many wells?

Because for centuries, Venice had no natural source of drinking water.

Rainwater was collected from rooftops and channelled into underground cisterns filled with sand, where it could be naturally filtered and stored.

The well in the centre of the campo was then used by the local community to collect fresh water.

What looks like a simple stone structure today was once an essential part of everyday Venetian life.

In Venice, even the wells have a story to tell.

Why does Venice have “campi” instead of squares?

If you've ever explored Venice, you may have noticed something unusual.

The city's public squares are usually called campi — literally, “fields”.

Why?

Centuries ago, many of these open spaces were not paved squares as we know them today. They were closer to fields or open ground, often used by local communities for everyday life.

Over time, the word remained.

That's why today you can wander through Campo Santa Margherita, Campo San Polo, Campo San Bartolomeo and hundreds of other Venetian campi.

There is only one place traditionally called a piazza:

Piazza San Marco.
