Molti credono che Shakespeare si sia inventato tutto. La verità? Il mito di Giulietta e Romeo nasce nel Duecento e le sue radici sono 100% italiane. Ma a dare forma e nomi alla tragedia per come la conosciamo fu un nobile vicentino, Luigi da Porto, che nel 1531 scelse proprio Verona come palcoscenico per il suo racconto. La storia viaggiò poi per l'Europa fino a conquistare il Bardo, che nel 1596 la rese immortale. A Verona, però, la magia ha preceduto la finzione. Già nel 1560 un antico sarcofago nella chiesa di San Francesco al Corso venne identificato come la Tomba di Giulietta. Quel marmo vuoto scatenò un vero "cortocircuito" tra realtà e letteratura: i viaggiatori del Grand Tour, vedendo la tomba, iniziarono a chiedersi: "Se esiste una tomba, ci sarà pure una casa?" È proprio da questa ricerca ostinata di un luogo in cui far abitare il sogno che è nata la famosissima Casa di Giulietta. Many believe Shakespeare invented the whole story. The truth? The legend of Romeo and Juliet dates back to the 13th century, and its roots are entirely Italian.
It was the Vicenza nobleman Luigi da Porto who, in 1531, gave the tragedy the shape and names we recognise today, choosing Verona as the setting for his tale. The story then travelled across Europe until it reached the Bard, who made it immortal in 1596.
In Verona, however, the magic came before the fiction. As early as 1560, an ancient sarcophagus in the church of San Francesco al Corso was identified as Juliet’s Tomb. That empty marble tomb blurred the line between reality and literature: travellers on the Grand Tour began to wonder, “If there is a tomb, surely there must be a house too?" It was precisely this determination to find a real place for the legend to live that eventually gave rise to the world-famous Juliet’s House.
