Hostel Inn Kyoto Gion opened its doors in the heart of the Gion district — steps from Yasaka Shrine, lantern-lit streets, and a city that has been telling its story for over a thousand years.
To every guest who stayed with us, explored Kyoto from our corner of Gion, or sat quietly with a brush in hand writing characters they'd never written before — thank you. You were never just passing through. You were part of what made this place what it was.
Hostel Inn Kyoto Gion will be closing its doors on July 24th.
Kyoto remains. The streets of Gion remain. And the memories made here — those go wherever you go.

The walk most people rush through. The one worth slowing down for. 🌿
The Philosopher’s Path (哲学の道) follows a narrow canal through the northern hills of Kyoto — from Ginkakuji southward, past hidden shrines, moss-covered walls, and in June, quiet stretches of hydrangea in bloom.
Named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who is said to have meditated here on his daily walks to Kyoto University. The path doesn’t ask much of you. Just your attention.
At the end — or the beginning, depending on which direction you walk — sits Ginkakuji. The Silver Pavilion that was never actually covered in silver. What it does have: a raked sand garden designed to reflect moonlight, a moss garden so deeply green it doesn’t seem real, and a hillside path that opens suddenly to a view over the entire city.
Less visited than Kinkakuji. More quietly beautiful.

急いで通り過ぎるには、もったいない道があります。🌿
哲学の道。銀閣寺から南へと続く、細い水路沿いの小径。哲学者・西田幾多郎が、京都大学へ向かう道すがら思索を巡らせたとされる場所です。
6月は、水路沿いに紫陽花が咲き、雨上がりの緑がいっそう深くなる季節。人混みも落ち着き、静かに歩くには最も心地よい季節かもしれません。
道の突き当たりには、銀閣寺。「銀閣寺」という名を持ちながら、実際に銀箔が貼られたことはないと言われています。月光を映すために設計された砂庭、吸い込まれるような苔庭、そして小高い丘から望む京都の景色——そこにあるのは、金よりずっと静かな美しさです。
金閣寺ほどの賑わいはないからこそ、ゆっくりとその美しさに向き合える場所です。

Five minutes from our front door. Most guests walk right past it. 🏯
Chion-in (知恩院) is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Japan — the headquarters of Jodo-shu Buddhism, founded in the 12th century. Its Sanmon Gate and Mieido Hall are designated National Treasures.
And almost no one on the tourist trail stops here.
A few things you’ll find inside:
💫A golden ring sculpture — a contemporary artwork. The circle represents the harmony of humans and nature across days, months, seasons, and centuries. At Chion-in, it resonates with something the temple has practiced for 800 years: the 108 bell strikes at New Year, each one releasing a human attachment, each one marking another cycle complete.
🪔 Bronze lanterns, stone incense burners, and lotus ponds in full summer bloom
🥤Possibly the only Buddhist-themed vending machine you’ll ever see in your life
🪨 A stone that reads: 念ずれば花ひらく — “If you pray, flowers bloom”
