親鸞聖人の旅の先に、名刀の物語。**
タッセルホテル三条白川から東へ歩いた、京都・粟田口。
そこにひっそりと佇むのが、**佛光寺本廟**です。
ここは真宗佛光寺派の墓所で、中心にある「おたまや」には、宗祖・**親鸞聖人の御真骨**が納められています。

親鸞聖人は京都に生まれ、越後国（現在の新潟県）へ流罪となった後、関東へ移り、現在の茨城県を中心に約20年間、念仏の教えを広めました。
晩年に京都へ戻り、その足跡の先にあるのが、この本廟です。

そして、ここ粟田口にはもう一つの歴史があります。
かつて多くの刀鍛冶が暮らしたこの地には、**三日月宗近**で知られる三条小鍛冶宗近の古跡が残されています。
さらに、宗近といえば**祇園祭の長刀鉾**。
鉾頭の長刀は、宗近が鍛造し、祇園社に奉納したものと伝えられています。
親鸞聖人の御廟と、名刀を生んだ刀鍛冶。
そして、今も京都の夏を彩る長刀鉾。
異なる歴史が、ここ粟田口で思いがけず重なっています。
京都を歩くと、こんな「小さな歴史」に出会えるのも魅力のひとつ。

A Small Historical Walk Vol. 4 | Bukkoji Mausoleum
**From Niigata to Ibaraki, and back to Kyoto.
A journey that leads to a story of legendary swords.**
Just a short walk east from Tassel Hotel Sanjo Shirakawa, in Kyoto's historic Awataguchi area, stands the quiet **Bukkoji Mausoleum**.
The mausoleum belongs to the Bukkoji school of Shin Buddhism, and the sacred remains of **Shinran**, the founder of the school, are enshrined here.
Born in Kyoto, Shinran was exiled to what is now Niigata Prefecture. He later moved to the Kanto region, where he spent about 20 years spreading his teachings, before returning to Kyoto later in life.
But there is another fascinating story hidden in Awataguchi.
This area was once home to many swordsmiths, including **Sanjo Kokaji Munechika**, famous for the legendary sword *Mikazuki Munechika*.
Munechika is also said to have forged the sword at the top of **Naginata Hoko**, one of the most famous floats of Kyoto's Gion Festival.
The mausoleum of a Buddhist founder, the legacy of master swordsmiths, and one of Kyoto's most iconic festival floats—
different stories of history unexpectedly come together here in Awataguchi.

This summer, Shoren-in Temple is hosting a special evening illumination event:
“Seirenge no Natsuakari” (Blue Lotus Summer Lights).
Known as one of Kyoto’s most prestigious temples, Shoren-in was once used as a temporary Imperial residence during the Edo period and is often referred to as “Awata Gosho.”
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of its illumination events, Shoren-in has partnered with the JR Tokai campaign “Souda Kyoto, Ikou.” (Yes, Let’s Go to Kyoto) to present its first-ever summer illumination.

1150年の歴史と、名刀と、ねぶた。
タッセルホテル三条白川から旧東海道の三条通を東へ歩いて約10分。
京都の東の玄関口「粟田口」に鎮座するのが、粟田神社です。
創建は平安時代の876年。
2026年5月には御鎮座1150年の式年大祭が執り行われた、由緒ある神社です。
境内の「鍛冶神社」には、名刀「三日月宗近」で知られる三条小鍛冶宗近と、名工・粟田口藤四郎吉光が祀られています。
かつて多くの刀工が暮らした粟田口は、刀剣好きにとっても特別な場所です。
そして、秋の粟田祭に登場するのが、灯りをともした巨大な灯籠の山車「粟田大燈呂（あわただいとうろ）」。
この大燈呂は、青森県の「ねぶた・ねぷた」の原型の一つではないかともいわれています。
起源が確定しているわけではありませんが、京都の秋を照らす大燈呂と、青森の夏を彩るねぶた・ねぷたが、一つの光の文化でつながっていると考えると、とてもロマンを感じます。
また、粟田神社は古くから、京都へ入る旅人や京都から旅立つ人々が道中の安全を祈願した神社でもありました。
1150年の歴史、名刀の記憶、そして青森へと続く光の祭り。
小さな境内には、いくつもの物語が重なっています。

1,150 years of history, legendary swords, and a connection to Nebuta.
Just a 10-minute walk from Tassel Hotel Sanjo Shirakawa, Awata Shrine stands at Awatagthe grounds is Kaji Shrine, dedicated to renowned swordsmiths including Sanjo Munechika, creator of the famous sword Mikazuki Munechika. Awataguchi was once home to many master swordsmiths, making it a special place for lovers of Japanese swords and history.
Awata Shrine is also known for the Awata Daitoro, a giant illuminated lantern float featured in the autumn Awata Festival. Some believe it may share historical roots with Aomori's famous Nebuta and Neputa festivals.

明智光秀の首塚

岐阜には、光秀ゆかりとされる美濃・土岐氏の歴史。
滋賀県多賀町佐目には、光秀出生の伝説。

In Gifu, traces of Mitsuhide can be found in the history of the Toki clan, said to be his ancestral family.
In Same, Taga Town of Shiga Prefecture, legends tell of his birthplace.
In Kameoka, Kyoto, stands Tanba Kameyama Castle, from which he set out for the Honno-ji Incident.
And on the border of Shimamoto in Osaka and Oyamazaki in Kyoto lies the historic battlefield of Yamazaki, where he fought his final battle against Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Yet Mitsuhide's story also reaches here, to Sanjo Shirakawa.
Nestled quietly along the Shirakawa Canal is a small mound believed to be the resting place of Akechi Mitsuhide's head after his defeat at the Battle of Yamazaki.
Just nearby, the noren curtain of Mochitora sways gently in the breeze, and the area is filled with the peaceful atmosphere of everyday Kyoto.
It is hard to imagine that more than 440 years ago, the tides of history may have reached this very place.
