Hinamatsuri, Girls’ Day or Dolls Festival is celebrated on March third each year to commemorate girls’ health, growth and happiness.

The origin dates back in Heian period, around 1200 years ago started as warding off bad evils and developed into a tradition celebrated in the current way in Edo period.
It is also said that girls would invite their friends over to their home to learn the manners to host guests.

Chirashi-sushi, clam clear soup, Hina arare and Amazake always come along with a display of gorgeous dolls representing an imperial couple and their attendants on this special day.

Home-made Eho-Maki, steamed savory egg custard and clear soup.

“Setsubun” is one day before spring starts, which is usually celebrated on February 3rd or 4th. In 2021, it falls on February 2nd for the first time in 124 years. On this day, we do “mame-maki”, a throwing roasted soybeans ceremony to drive out evil spirits and pray for the family’s well-being.
In recent years, we also eat “Eho-maki”, which literally means “lucky direction sushi roll” according to the custom originated in Kansai, which spread quickly all over Japan in the last few decades. We are supposed to eat it in silence facing the lucky direction of the year while making a wish.
Eho-maki is usually served as whole without cutting into pieces.

“Kagami Biraki” on January 11th, is
a traditional ceremony to eat Mochi in Japan. We display round layered Mochi in the house over new year’s which the god of new year is believed to stay in for the first 7 days. On January 11th, (odd numbers are associated with being good luck in Japan), we eat the Mochi hoping for good luck and health.

This is “Zenzai”, sweet soup made with Mochi and sweet red bean paste.
Ingredients and recipe available via “marchejapon”. Message me.

“Osechi”, a set of specific dishes cooked specially for New Year’s, which is supposed to be eaten for the first three days of the year.
All the house wives used be so busy preparing this at home for the last few days of the year.
Now it’s become the most typical store-bought meal😂

I hope next year we can enjoy Osechi with my guests.

Hope the day when we can travel like before comes back soon. #お正月飾り #ホームステイ
