Meet Reo 👋⛷️
This summer, we’re excited to have Reo join the Nozawa Holidays team as an intern.
Reo is a university student and member of his university’s ski club, where he competes and trains throughout the year. He’s spending his summer here in Nozawa Onsen, combining hands-on work experience with his passion for skiing.

His days start early, helping our team prepare the villas, assisting with guest departures and getting things ready for the next arrivals. Once the work is done, it’s time to grab his skis and head up the mountain for training. 🎿
And when the skiing and work are finished, Reo gets to experience another important part of life in Nozawa, the community. He’s been meeting other seasonal workers, connecting with people from different teams around the village and enjoying the quieter side of Nozawa during summer.

For us, having young people like Reo join the team is about more than just work. It’s about giving the next generation of skiers an opportunity to experience life in a ski village, learn the hospitality business from the inside, build new skills and train in an environment where skiing is part of everyday life.

Nozawa Onsen has an incredibly deep connection with competitive skiing. The village has produced 16 Olympic skiers, and athletes continue to come here throughout the year to train. Skiing isn’t simply an activity here, it’s part of the village’s identity and culture. 🇯🇵⛷️

We’re really happy to have Reo with us this summer and look forward to watching his skiing develop over the coming months.
Work. Train. Learn. Ski. Repeat.
Who knows where this journey might take him next! 🤞⛷️

Art in Nozawa – Taro Okamoto
One of the most iconic symbols of Nozawa Onsen is the 湯 (“Yu”) sign, meaning “hot springs.” You can spot it all around the village. ♨️

You’ll spot it on signs leading to the onsens, as well as on the logo of the Tourist Information Centre.
The symbol was designed by famous avant-garde artist Taro Okamoto, whose iconic works can be found all across Japan.

In 1974, Okamoto was commissioned to create a monument celebrating Nozawa Onsen’s sister-village partnership with St. Anton. The monument stands near the Tourist Information Centre.

From then on, he fell in love with Nozawa Onsen, skiing here, enjoying the many hot springs, and experiencing the Dosojin Fire Festival 🔥

He became a regular visitor and was loved by the locals. In 1991, he became the first honorary citizen of Nozawa Onsen.
You can also find another one of his works, “The Maiden of Nozawa,” in front of Nozawa Onsen Village Hall. ✨

Meet the Dosoujin of Nozawa Onsen✨

As you wander through Nozawa Onsen, you'll notice charming wooden statues of a man and woman, often standing side by side like a married couple. 👫

These are Dosoujin, ancient Shinto deities believed to protect travelers, guard village boundaries, and keep away evil spirits and misfortune. Their appearance as a couple comes from a local folktale about two kind-hearted people who found happiness together despite life's hardships. ❤️

Every year on January 15, Nozawa Onsen celebrates the Nozawa Dosoujin Matsuri, one of Japan's most spectacular fire festivals. 🔥

In the days leading up to the festival, villagers build a towering wooden shrine using five sacred beech trees from the surrounding mountains. On festival night, the shrine is defended by 25- and 42-year-old men—the traditional yakudoshi ("unlucky years") while the rest of the village attempts to set it ablaze with burning torches.

The fiery celebration is a prayer for fertility, happy marriages, healthy children, and protection for the year ahead. During the festival, locals also exchange small wooden Dosoujin figurines as tokens of good fortune. ✨

A walk through Nozawa Onsen isn't just about hot springs, it's a chance to discover centuries of tradition, folklore, and community spirit.

Exploring the streets of Nozawa. One of the things that makes Nozawa Onsen so special is that it isn’t simply a ski resort.
Unlike many resort destinations in Japan, Nozawa is a real, traditional working village — a place where people live, work, go about their daily lives and have done so for generations.
And one of the great pleasures of being here is simply wandering the streets.
In winter, weave your way through narrow lanes lined with old wooden houses, steaming onsen baths, small restaurants, local shops and the unmistakable buzz of a snow-covered village coming to life.
In summer, the same streets take on a completely different character. The snow disappears, the greenery returns, and you discover quiet alleyways, traditional architecture, local gardens, shrines, cafés and the everyday rhythm of village life.
There’s always something to see, somewhere to wander and someone going about their day.
That’s what makes Nozawa more than a ski destination.
It’s a destination for all seasons — and a village worth getting lost in. ♨️🌿❄️

🌾 Rice or Ice? Green or White – which do you prefer?
Slide to compare.
As the vibrant green rice grows taller and the grains begin to form, we’re reminded that harvest isn’t far away. Not long after that, the temperatures begin to drop, and before we know it, these same fields will be blanketed in snow.
In just four months, we could be skiing right here in Nozawa Onsen. Hard to believe when the thermometer outside my front door is reading 35°C!
If you haven’t already booked your ski holiday, now’s the time. January and February are already filling up fast.
And don’t overlook March and April—they can be some of the best times to visit, with fantastic skiing, sunny days, fewer crowds, and a wonderful atmosphere in the village.
