Hotel Notes: How Kijani came together.

There are three old houses at the heart of Kijani. Historic Swahili coral-stone houses, each a few storeys high and dating back centuries. They stood in Shela long before Kijani became a hotel.

It took close to a decade of painstaking restoration to bring the three together while keeping their character, working with the old structures and turning them into the Kijani you see today.

A lot of the history is still right in front of you.

Look closely at the walls, the old details, the courtyards and the way the houses connect.

Kijani is, in many ways, three old Shela houses telling one story.

A table at Kijani.

Some guests come up to the rooftop for breakfast and stay long enough for lunch. Others wander in from Shela, sit down for a meal and end up staying a little longer than planned.

On the table, it might be grilled octopus, chicken, fresh salads, chapati or a bowl of noodles; a mix of things our guests have come to enjoy, depending on the day and what they’re hungry for.

Our rooftop restaurant is open to both in-house guests and walk-ins. Come up, find a table and see what’s cooking.

One of guests’ favourite corners at Kijani.

Tucked into the garden, under a little shade, surrounded by palms and with the view of the sea beyond, it’s an easy place to lose an hour or two.

It’s the sort of place that works for everything; morning coffee, an afternoon drink, a book, or a candid conversation.

A little Bao after dinner.

One of the simplest ways to spend an evening in Kijani Lamu is a board, a handful of seeds and someone who is very sure they’re about to win.

Bao has been played along the Swahili coast for generations, and it’s the kind of game that can turn a quiet evening into a very serious competition.

The most beautiful time in Shela is during a sunset dhow cruise.

For generations, dhows have been part of life along the Swahili coast carrying people, fishermen and goods between the islands and the mainland.

Today, you can step onto one at the end of the day and experience the same waters differently.

It’s a simple way to spend an evening, but one that is unforgettable.
