As I was walking past a small handmade dumpling shop near my home, the sight of warm steam rising from the freshly cooked dumplings immediately caught my attention. I couldn’t resist, so I picked up a tray each of kimchi and pork dumplings and brought them home to enjoy with my family.

Dumplings have a long history shaped by the movement and exchange of food cultures across Central Asia, Mongolia, and China. After reaching Korea, they gradually evolved with local ingredients and cooking traditions into something distinctly Korean.

What I love most about Korean mandu is the generous filling. Kimchi, vegetables, glass noodles, tofu, and pork are packed inside a thin wrapper, creating a wonderful balance of flavor and texture in every bite.

Korean mandu has developed its own character—different from many Chinese-style steamed dumplings with thicker wrappers, and also from Japanese gyoza, which are often pan-fried until crisp. Kimchi mandu, in particular, feels uniquely Korean, bringing our tradition of fermented food right into the dumpling itself.

Vegetables, tofu, meat, and fermented ingredients all come together naturally in a single bite. To me, that balance of flavor, nutrition, and texture is one of the things that makes Korean cuisine so special.

Sharing a plate of warm, freshly made mandu with my family reminded me once again:

Korean food doesn’t always need to be fancy.
It can be simple, wholesome, comforting, and incredibly delicious.
And that’s exactly why I love it.

For one full hour, you and your loved ones have the entire private space to yourselves to take as many photos as you like, completely uninterrupted. Afterwards, you can pick your favorite shots to print out and take home as a lasting memory of your time on the island.
