Through the glowing streets of Kandy, flag bearers step forward, raising the national, provincial, and Buddhist flags high above the crowd. With every movement, the colours dance beneath the temple lights, not merely as symbols, but as stories woven through generations.

They speak of a land, its people, its heritage, and a faith that has continued to guide hearts through the passing of time.

As evening settles over Kandy, the drums grow louder and the streets begin to glow beneath the lights of the Perahera.

Then, through the darkness, the flames appear. 🔥

The fireball dancers step into the procession, spinning blazing fire with remarkable rhythm, courage, and precision. Every movement is a powerful blend of skill and tradition, passed down through generations.
For the crowd, it is a breathtaking spectacle. But beyond the flames lies something deeper — a living connection between Sri Lanka’s heritage, artistry, and tradition.
As the fire circles beneath the Kandy sky, the past and present seem to meet for one unforgettable moment.

When Tradition Takes the Streets | Stories from Bellwood hills
Chapter 02 — The Story of the Kandyan Dancers

Before the procession arrives, you hear them.

The drums begin to speak.

And then, beneath the lights of Kandy, the dancers appear — moving with strength, precision and a grace that seems to belong to another time.

But Kandyan dancing is more than a performance.

Its roots are deeply connected to the traditions of the Kandyan Kingdom and to ancient ritual practices. Over generations, these movements, rhythms and costumes became an important part of Sri Lanka’s cultural identity.

Every movement has meaning.

The powerful steps.
The controlled turns.
The movement of the arms.
The rhythm that follows the drum.

Together, they tell a story without saying a single word.

And then comes the costume.

The brilliant Ves costume, with its elaborate headdress, silver ornaments and carefully crafted details, is one of the most recognisable symbols of Kandyan dance. Traditionally associated with male dancers, it gives the performer an almost regal presence beneath the Perahera lights.

But perhaps the most beautiful part of the tradition is what happens beyond the streets of Kandy.

A young dancer learns from a master.
A rhythm is repeated thousands of times.
A movement perfected through years of discipline.
And eventually, the same dancer steps into the Perahera — carrying forward something that belonged to generations before him.

So when you watch the Kandyan dancers move through the streets during the Esala Perahera, you are not simply watching a dance.

You are watching history in motion.

The drums echo.
The dancers move.
And an ancient tradition continues to live.

Under the Esala moon, Kandy dances with its history.
