උලමා (Ulama) often called the “Devil Bird” in Sri Lankan folklore, is one of the island’s most misunderstood voices of the night.

Largely identified as the Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl, this elusive predator is rarely seen, but often heard. Its deep, haunting call has echoed through village stories for generations, sometimes mistaken for something supernatural.

In reality, it is one of the largest carnivorous birds found in Sri Lanka, powerful, silent, and essential to the balance of the wild.

The name “Devil Bird” is believed to come from the male’s mating call intense, human-like, and unforgettable.

Not a warning… just nature, misunderstood.
