September starts with something from the garden — the seasonal menu has changed.

With the arrival of the rains, the kitchen gets a little more inspiration from what’s growing around us. Chef Jayaratne adapts the menu around fresh garden vegetables, local greens, seasonal fruit, and ingredients sourced from nearby growers and markets.

Rather than sticking to the same dishes throughout the year, he lets the season have a say. The cooking remains rooted in familiar Sri Lankan flavours, but what arrives on the table changes with what’s fresh and available.

It’s simple, local cooking — with the menu evolving alongside the landscape.

As August closes, the lodge shifts — here's what changes at Claughton Wild in September.

September brings a subtle change to the landscape around Claughton Wild. As the wet season begins, the paddy fields become greener, the air carries more moisture, and the first rains bring a burst of activity from frogs, insects, and birds around the lodge.

Wilpattu changes with it. Vegetation becomes denser, water sources begin to fill, and wildlife responds to the changing conditions in its own way. The atmosphere becomes quieter and more intimate, with rain showers adding another layer to the experience of being close to the wilderness.

If you’ve only experienced Sri Lanka in the dry season, this is a side of Wilpattu worth discovering.

September has its own kind of magic.

This is what you captured at Claughton Wild.

We get to experience Wilpattu every day, but our guests see it in their own way — and we love that.

From leopards moving through the forest to elephants, birds, sloth bears, and all the smaller moments in between, guest photography gives us a chance to see the park through a completely different lens.

If you've stayed with us and captured a wildlife moment you're proud of, tag in your photo. We'd love to share more of your encounters and the stories behind them.

Your lens sees things we never tire of.

The best summer holidays are the ones you almost didn't book.

You know the trip — the one you nearly postponed because there was always something else to do.

Then you arrive in Wilpattu. You wake to birdsong and paddy-field views, spend the morning looking for wildlife, return for a swim, and realise that perhaps taking a few days away was exactly what you needed.

There are still a handful of August dates available at Claughton Wild for travellers who haven't quite made their plans yet.

Sometimes the best decision is simply to go.

Would you take a spontaneous August escape to Wilpattu?

The freshest ingredients come from the closest farms — here's what's on this week's menu.

Chef Jayaratne’s cooking starts with what’s fresh and available nearby. Seasonal vegetables from local growers, fresh fish, coconut, bananas, papaya, and other fruits from the surrounding area all make their way into the kitchen.

Rather than following a fixed menu built around imported ingredients, the cooking responds to what the season and local markets offer. That means the food can change from week to week — but the approach stays the same: fresh produce, authentic Sri Lankan flavours, and generous home-style cooking.

It’s one of the simplest ways to experience a little more of the place you’re visiting.

Hyperlocal before it was trendy.

What local ingredient would you most want to try in Sri Lanka?

Why Wilpattu has fewer visitors than Yala — and why that matters for your experience.

Wilpattu isn’t the easiest national park to reach from Colombo. It’s more remote, has less tourism infrastructure, and the journey takes longer.

But those are precisely the things that make it appealing to travellers who value a quieter, less commercial wildlife experience.

There’s more space. Fewer vehicles on the tracks. Less of that feeling that you’re following a well-worn tourist route. And more opportunity to experience the park on its own terms — slowly, patiently, and without knowing what might appear around the next corner.

It takes a little more effort to reach Wilpattu. That’s part of the point.

Not every national park should be for everyone.

Mid-August at the edge of the park — the jungle is at its most lush.

August brings a different character to the landscape around Claughton Wild. The greenery feels dense and alive, the paddy fields stretch out in every direction, and the warm, humid air carries birdsong and the constant rustle of leaves.

Spend a little time outside and you start noticing how much is happening around you — birds moving through the trees, insects humming in the undergrowth, and the occasional distant call from the wilderness beyond.

It’s a reminder that being close to Wilpattu isn’t only about what you see on safari. Sometimes, it’s simply about being surrounded by nature.

Do you prefer Sri Lanka when everything is at its greenest?

Today, we celebrate one of the great characters of Sri Lanka’s wilderness.

An elephant sighting in Wilpattu can stop a safari in its tracks. Whether one is moving quietly through the forest or appearing beside a waterhole, there’s a sense of scale and presence that makes the moment difficult to forget.

But World Elephant Day is about more than appreciating these incredible animals. It’s also about recognising the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on. Sri Lanka’s elephants face significant pressure from human-elephant conflict, making conservation and the protection of connected wild spaces essential.

Today, we’re grateful for the elephants that continue to call Sri Lanka home, and for the people working to protect them.

What’s the most memorable elephant sighting you’ve ever had?
