Today we celebrate another very special person in our FlipFlop family: Watsala, Sachi’s eldest sister.
Family is an important part of life in Sri Lanka – and it is also a big part of what makes The FlipFlop feel like home.
Watsala belongs to this story too, and today is her day. So from all of us at The FlipFlop:

Heute feiern wir wieder einen ganz besonderen Menschen aus unserer FlipFlop-Familie: Watsala, Sachis älteste Schwester.
Familie spielt in Sri Lanka eine große Rolle – und sie ist auch ein wichtiger Teil dessen, was das FlipFlop so familiär und persönlich macht.
Auch Watsala gehört zu dieser Geschichte, und heute ist ihr Tag. Deshalb sagen wir alle gemeinsam:

Yoga with a jungle view!
Sometimes you don't need much.
A yoga mat, a quiet morning, tropical greenery all around you – and a little time just for yourself.
At The FlipFlop, our terrace is also a lovely place to roll out a mat, stretch, breathe and start the day slowly.
And don't worry: you definitely don't need to be a yoga professional. Even a few relaxed stretches count. 😉

Yoga mit Dschungelblick!
Manchmal braucht es gar nicht viel.
Eine Yogamatte, einen ruhigen Morgen, tropisches Grün rundherum – und ein bisschen Zeit nur für sich selbst.
Auch unsere Terrasse im FlipFlop eignet sich wunderbar, um die Matte auszurollen, sich ein wenig zu bewegen, tief durchzuatmen und ganz entspannt in den Tag zu starten.
Und keine Sorge: Man muss dafür definitiv kein Yoga-Profi sein. Ein paar gemütliche Dehnübungen zählen schließlich auch. 😉

Today we celebrate someone very special to our family and to The FlipFlop.
Mekala is Sachi’s sister, but she is also one of those people who is always there when help is needed, when something has to be organised or when a guest needs a little extra care.
She is one of the good souls behind The FlipFlop – usually without making a big fuss about it.
Dear Mekala, we wish you a wonderful birthday, lots of happiness and many beautiful moments in the year ahead.
We are very lucky to have you.

Heute feiern wir einen ganz besonderen Menschen für unsere Familie und für The FlipFlop.

GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT SRI LANKA: EATING WITH YOUR HANDS!
In Sri Lanka, many people traditionally eat rice and curry with their right hand.
Why? Because mixing the rice, curry and sambol with your fingers brings all the flavours together – and many Sri Lankans will tell you it simply tastes better this way.
Usually, a small portion is shaped with the fingertips and gently pushed into the mouth with the thumb.
One important rule: use the right hand for eating.
And don’t worry – as a guest, you can always use cutlery. But trying it once is definitely part of the Sri Lanka experience.

GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT SRI LANKA: MIT DEN HÄNDEN ESSEN
In Sri Lanka wird Reis mit Curry traditionell sehr oft mit der rechten Hand gegessen.
Warum? Weil Reis, Curry und Sambol mit den Fingern gut miteinander vermischt werden – und viele Sri Lanker sagen, dass es so einfach besser schmeckt.
Mit den Fingerspitzen wird eine kleine Portion geformt und anschließend mit dem Daumen vorsichtig in den Mund geschoben.
Eine wichtige Regel dabei: Gegessen wird mit der rechten Hand.
Und keine Sorge – als Gast könnt ihr natürlich jederzeit Besteck benutzen. Aber einmal ausprobieren gehört für uns definitiv zum Sri-Lanka-Erlebnis dazu.

FRUIT OF THE MONTH: WOOD APPLE
In Sri Lanka, wood apple is called Divul.
It has a very hard shell, brown pulp and a strong sweet-and-sour flavour. It is often served as a drink, but also used for desserts and chutneys.
The smell may make you hesitate for a second – but the taste might surprise you.
Would you try it?

In Sri Lanka heißt die Wood Apple Divul.
Sie hat eine sehr harte Schale, braunes Fruchtfleisch und einen intensiven süß-säuerlichen Geschmack. Oft wird sie als Getränk serviert, aber auch für Desserts und Chutneys verwendet.
Der Geruch lässt einen vielleicht kurz zögern – aber der Geschmack kann überraschen.

Manjari is one of those places where you can easily spend much more time than planned.

It may not be a classic tourist attraction, but places like this are a wonderful way to experience everyday life in Sri Lanka.
And let’s be honest: somehow you always find something you did not know you needed.

EINKAUFEN WIE DIE EINHEIMISCHEN
Manjari ist einer dieser Orte, an denen man ganz schnell viel mehr Zeit verbringt als geplant.
Von Haushaltswaren und Küchenzubehör über Aufbewahrungskörbe, Dekoration und Bilderrahmen bis hin zu vielen praktischen Dingen für den Alltag gibt es unglaublich viel zu entdecken.
Es ist vielleicht keine klassische Sehenswürdigkeit, aber genau solche Orte zeigen auch den ganz normalen Alltag in Sri Lanka.
Und seien wir ehrlich: Irgendetwas findet man dort immer, von dem man vorher gar nicht wusste, dass man es braucht.

14 years, countless memories and still no perfect selfie
Fourteen years ago, we said “yes” to each other in Sri Lanka.
Since then, we have shared love, everyday life, countless beautiful moments, a few challenges, two countries and one very special project: The FlipFlop.
We do not always agree on everything, we definitely do not always pose perfectly for photos, and sometimes one of us takes up a little more space than the other.
But after 14 years, we still choose each other again and again.
Unawatuna is not only the place where our story began. It became part of our life, our family and our home.
Happy anniversary to us – and here’s to many more years of love, laughter and slightly chaotic selfies.
14 Jahre, unzählige Erinnerungen und noch immer kein perfektes Selfie
Vor 14 Jahren haben wir in Sri Lanka Ja zueinander gesagt.
Seitdem teilen wir Liebe, Alltag, unzählige schöne Momente, einige Herausforderungen, zwei Länder und ein ganz besonderes gemeinsames Projekt: The FlipFlop.
Wir sind uns natürlich nicht immer bei allem einig, posieren definitiv nicht immer perfekt für Fotos und manchmal nimmt einer von uns ein kleines bisschen mehr Platz ein als der andere.
Aber auch nach 14 Jahren entscheiden wir uns immer wieder füreinander.
Unawatuna ist nicht nur der Ort, an dem unsere Geschichte begann. Es wurde ein Teil unseres Lebens, unserer Familie und unserer Heimat.
Alles Gute zum Hochzeitstag für uns – auf viele weitere Jahre voller Liebe, Lachen und leicht chaotischer Selfies.
