Every island has a story. Not every story begins with a promise. Milaidhoo’s does.

Before a single piece of timber was laid, this small island in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve was exactly as nature intended: lush, uninhabited and ringed by a coral reef teeming with life.

When the Maldivian family who owned it decided to open it to guests, they faced a choice: build around the island or build with it.

They chose the second path, long before ‘sustainability’ became a buzzword. Ten years on, it’s still the quiet thread running through everything we do, from our curved rooflines to looking after the house reef.

At Shoreline Grill, Chef Daniel Galmiche and our culinary team transformed a classic w**e-pairing dinner with local elements, while Kamal Malik MS, India’s first Master Sommelier and 278th worldwide, brought his w**e expertise to the table.

Meet Aishath Shaaha Ahmed, known as Saaha. At just 19, she’s already finding her place in Maldivian cuisine.

Saaha is from Kendhoo, a local island close to Milaidhoo. After six months in a guesthouse kitchen, she joined us as Commis at Ba’theli, where she works alongside our senior Maldivian chefs and is the only female chef in this kitchen.

Her love of cooking began at home, watching her mother. Her favourite dish, Kandoo Kukulhu, is a reminder of those roots. Her favourite moment is watching a first-time guest taste something she has made and seeing their face light up.

Her home island is close enough to see, but she says she has found a second place to call home here.

The most memorable moments are rarely the most extravagant; they’re the most personal.

Take our private sandbank sleep-out. In practical terms, it’s simple: a secluded sandbank in the middle of the Baa Atoll, a beautifully dressed four-poster bed beneath the stars and a luxury yacht anchored discreetly nearby for comfort and privacy.

Yet it feels extraordinary because of what money alone can’t buy. The silence. Waking up surrounded by nothing but the Indian Ocean. The knowledge that, for one night, you have an entire corner of the Maldives seemingly to yourselves.

When French craft met the Maldives, the whole island joined in.

This September, four-time Michelin-starred Chef spent a day living the Maldivian way.

It began at sea, fishing from a traditional dhoni. Then a tour of a nearby local island, to meet the people who live there and gather ingredients. Back at Ba’theli, he joined our Maldivian chef for a hands-on workshop, creating an original dish from the fish caught that morning and the ingredients collected on the island.

At Milaidhoo, food is always about bringing people together, with the island as our inspiration and the table at the heart of it all. Ten years in, that hasn’t changed.

“The whole experience felt effortless, which is perhaps one of the greatest luxuries. I am probably more demanding than the average guest, and yet I truly struggle to find anything negative to say about Milaidhoo.
