Small creatures. Extraordinary details. 🌊 This International Sea Slug Day, take a closer look at some of the most colourful residents beneath the blue at Niva Velassaru.

Around The Dome and beneath Sora Restaurant, both nudibranchs and sea hares can be found quietly moving through the reef. These marine molluscs may be small, but their colours, patterns and shapes are anything but understated.

Nudibranch means “naked gills”, a reference to the exposed breathing structures that give these remarkable creatures their name. Their vivid appearance can help them disappear into their surroundings — or signal to predators that they may be toxic.

And some sea slugs have an even more surprising talent: by retaining chloroplasts from the algae they eat, they can harness energy from sunlight through photosynthesis.

A reminder that some of the ocean’s most fascinating stories are found in the smallest details. 💙

A living reef, growing beneath the surface. Ten metres below the lagoon, the Niva Velassaru Coral Dome is slowly becoming part of the underwater world around it — coral fragments taking hold, marine life returning, a new ecosystem gradually taking shape. 🌊🐠💙

Created as an artificial reef, the dome gives new coral space to grow while supporting the wider marine ecosystem around our island. Large enough to swim through, it can be explored with our in-house Dive Centre as the reef continues to evolve.

Join our Coral Adoption Programme and give new coral fragments a place to grow. Restoration happens quietly. Become part of what’s growing.
