Six sharks. Six unique patterns. One remarkable house reef. 🦈🌊
Meet Atlas, Aurelian, Kikongo, Ambala, Ingwe and Fowler — six individual Indo-Pacific leopard sharks identified along our house reef.
Just like human fingerprints, every leopard shark carries its own unique pattern of dots and spots. Through careful observation, photography and collaboration with the Miyaru Programme, our in-house Marine Biologist and PADI IDC Staff Instructor, Kayla Shortt, led the documentation and identification work that resulted in these six individual records being added to the Maldives leopard shark identification database.
These distinctive markings allow marine biologists to recognise the same sharks when they are sighted again, helping build a better understanding of their presence and movements across local reef habitats.
For us, every encounter beneath the surface is more than a beautiful moment. It is another opportunity to observe, learn and contribute to protecting the extraordinary marine life that calls Maamutaa home. 💙
Next time you explore our house reef, keep an eye out — you might just meet one of the six.
