Science Project
May 11-15. 2026

This past week CINDAQ and Zero Gravity hosted the twice yearly Science Project.

Traditionally this spring project is smaller than the winter project but this allowed us to experiment with a couple of new objectives.

8 GUE divers visited 8 distinct sites over 5 days.

Hydro-Geology
Apart from the usual sediment and calcite work we also removed, downloaded and reinstalled a flow meter with Dr. Eduard Reinhardt that had been logging the changes in flow through a section of the Ox Bel Ha cave system. In addition we swapped out an array of Hobo sensors nearby. We look forward to expand these deployments in the future to further document and understand the area’s aquifer.

Cave Biology
Although cave biologist Efrain Chavez Solis couldn’t make it for the project we were able to incorporate biological surveys in the salt water portions of the caves in this weeks efforts. In a collaborative effort between CINDAQ and CENOTEANDO, we inaugurated a new long term analysis of the distribution and quantity of troglodytic life inhabiting the caves of this area. Harnessing Efrain’s expertise, ZG diver’s capacity and CINDAQ’s ability to geographically catalogue the data, we look to develop and incorporate these protocols in Science projects going forward.

Both Dr. Reinhardt and Biol. Efrain Solis are GUE qualified cave divers, furthering the synergy of these Science Projects with mutually interesting underwater collaboration for all!

Congratulations to Steve and Paul from the US 🇺🇸 who after many years of diving took the pledge to go back to the Basics.

They completed the Basic Fundamentals with .dahan so they could learn different approaches, gear configuration and refine their basic skills like buoyancy, trim, propulsion technics and more.

What is the best way to put your new sets of skills in practice while visiting us here in Mexico? Visiting the beautiful cavern in the area !!
