Today on World Oceans Day, we'd like to share this post from Bonefish & Tarpon Trust highlighting the incredible journey of permit larvae. These fish fuel our passion on the flats, and protecting healthy oceans ensures future generations can experience the thrill of seeing their first tailing permit 🌎🐟
Did you know permit larvae drift in the open ocean? In honor of , here are facts about permit in the larval stage:
🕛 Fertilized eggs hatch after about a day.
🌊 The larvae float in the open ocean for about 20 days before they end up close to shore along open beaches.
🌎 The larvae are distributed via ocean currents throughout the Gulf and Caribbean.
🐟🐟🐟 Permit spawning in one location potentially supports the fishery throughout the region.
Threats and conservation efforts:
🏖️ In order for larvae to develop into juveniles (and eventually, adults), they need healthy habitat. Dredging and building overwater structures destroys and degrades the shallow, sandy beach and flats habitats that juvenile permit need.
🗺️ That’s why BTT Belize is mapping the habitats that permit use in Belize and Mexico to prioritize those that need protection, and opposing unwise development projects.
