George Town, Penang was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 which spurred Chris on to saving more heritage buildings in the core zone. Noordin Mews was sold during its first month of operation. Ong then decided to re-invest the finances from the sale to save more likewise buildings. Down the road, more properties were added namely Seven Terraces and Muntri Grove and the latest edition

to the list is the Jawi Peranakan Mansion which will start its operation soon. Each hotel showcases a range of 19th century architecture, integral to Penang’s history and heritage, in hip setting yet modern and comfortable for today’s living. George Town Heritage & Hotels (GTHH) is now a portal for Chris Ong’s portfolio of hotels to better serve guests with seamless bookings, reservations and enquiries for each individual hotels. In the near future, GTHH will also serve as an information hub on Penang’s cultural events. A Throwback to Our Mid-July Prayer Ceremony

Taking a moment to look back at the beautiful moments from our Mid-July Prayer Ceremony in George Town.

Through these photographs, we remember the peaceful prayers, traditional rituals, meaningful gatherings, and the quiet moments shared by the community.

One of the fascinating traditions captured during the ceremony is the preparation of paper offerings for the spirits. Alongside paper clothes and spirit money, there are even paper versions of everyday necessities - carefully prepared and divided into sets for men and women, reflecting the belief that the spirits should also have the things they need in their daily lives.

Beyond the ceremony itself, these traditions are part of the living heritage of Penang..... passed down through generations and continuing to bring people together.

Keeping the Tradition Alive During Hungry Ghost Festival

During the Hungry Ghost Festival, the team at Georgetown Heritage Hotels comes together to observe an important tradition that has been passed down through generations.

In the late afternoon, our staff begin preparing the offerings. Setting up the tables with an abundance of traditional food, fruits, tea, incense and other necessities for the prayers.

Once everything is ready, Chris Ong, founder of Georgetown Heritage Hotels, leads the team in prayer and offerings to Hoh Hiah Dee (好兄弟), showing respect to the wandering spirits during this special period of the lunar calendar.

For us, these traditions are more than a ceremony. They are part of Penang's living heritage, a way of bringing our team together, respecting our cultural roots, and keeping these meaningful traditions alive for the next generation.

Today 19th day of the 6th Lunar month, marks the Guan Yin Enlightenment Festival (观音成道日) - a sacred occasion honouring the enlightenment of the Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin.

Experience the vibrant traditions as the Goddess of Mercy Temple (Guan Im Teng) fills with devotees, prayers, offerings, and spectacular Chinese opera performances in the evening, creating a truly unforgettable cultural atmosphere.

What an incredible day as we celebrated the launch of Chris's latest book - Chris Ong's Heritage Rituals, alongside our special Heritage Exhibition.

What happens when traditions are no longer understood?

From Chinese New Year and Qingming (Cheng Beng) to the Hungry Ghost Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Winter Solstice, these rituals have been part of our lives for generations. But without meaning and connection, they risk being forgotten.

Chris believes heritage should be lived, not just preserved. The Heritage Rituals Book was created to share the stories, beliefs, and practices behind these traditions in a way that resonates with younger generations - offering authentic answers to the question, "Why do we still do this?"

Because when we understand our traditions, we're more likely to keep them alive.

Behind the doors of The Gallery at Seven Terraces, months of preparation are finally coming together. Every display has been thoughtfully curated, every artefact carefully placed, and every detail refined to bring history back to life.

This year's Heritage Day Exhibition showcases an extraordinary collection of Straits Chinese blue-and-white porcelain (青花瓷), including rare pieces dating back to the Mid Qing Dynasty. Lovingly preserved through generations, these heirloom ceramics were once integral to ancestral veneration and religious rituals in Penang's Straits Chinese homes.

In just a few more days, these treasured collections and stories will be unveiled to the public.
