Today, our heritage guesthouse is filled with happiness as one of our international guests celebrates their wedding here! 🎊❤️

🇬🇧 It’s that time of the year again! 👻🏮

Every year during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, our street comes alive in a very special way.

This is probably the busiest and liveliest time of the year on our street. Neighbours, families, and even former neighbours who used to live here will return to catch up with old friends, share memories and spend time together.

For four evenings in a row, there will be different performances, including traditional Chinese opera (歌仔戏) and live singing performances on the stage.

It’s always lovely to see the street filled with familiar faces, laughter, music and memories. ❤️

Alongside the celebrations, you will also see traditional prayer altars, food offerings and incense.

For the local Chinese community, these offerings are a way to honour ancestors, remember loved ones who have passed away, and show respect to wandering spirits during the Hungry Ghost Festival.

And why are there performances?

Traditionally, Getai (歌台) and Chinese opera are believed to entertain the visiting spirits. Over the years, however, they have also become a much-loved part of the community gathering — bringing neighbours, families and friends together.

So this is not simply a “festival about ghosts”.

For us, it is also about coming home, meeting old neighbours, keeping traditions alive, sharing memories and enjoying four evenings together as a community.

🇨🇳 又到了一年一度的这个时候！👻🏮

每年农历七月，我们这条街都会迎来一年当中非常特别的时光。

这也是我们这条街一年中最热闹、最有活力的时候。邻居们、家人们，甚至是以前曾经住在这里的老街坊，也都会在这个时候回来，和老朋友叙旧、分享回忆、聚在一起。

连续 四个晚上，街道上都会有不同的表演，包括传统的歌仔戏以及舞台上的歌唱表演。

每年看到街道上重新聚满熟悉的面孔，听到大家的笑声、音乐和歌声，总会让人觉得特别有温度。❤️

在热闹的庆祝活动之外，您也会看到传统的祭坛、供品和香火。

对于当地华人社区来说，这些祭拜是为了祭祀祖先、缅怀已经离世的亲人，同时也向中元节期间来到人间的“好兄弟”表达敬意。

那么，为什么会有这些表演呢？

传统上，人们相信歌台和歌仔戏也是为了娱乐七月期间来到人间的灵魂。经过多年的发展，这些表演也已经成为当地非常重要、深受大家喜爱的社区活动，让邻居、家人和朋友能够聚在一起。

所以，中元节对我们来说，并不只是一个关于“鬼”的节日。

它也是一个大家回来相聚、寻找老邻居、延续传统、分享回忆，并一起热热闹闹度过四个晚上的时光。
